Ok, so here is the million dollar question. How long should I be playing the guitar to get better. 2 Hours, 5 hours. I am a real beginner.

Play it as long as you can, even past the point of it being purely fun. Make yourself learn theory, scales, modes, etc... if you want to be good at it and not just enjoy it.

I agree with Musicman. Granted, it's been a WHILE since the beginning days.. but here's the thing: you stop to eat. You stop to pee. -everything else becomes "secondary" if you TRULY wish to pursue guitar mastery. I have given up a lot of stuff when I was starting out.. even my father could tell you times when he would come into my room in the night and pull the guitar out of my hands when I had fallen asleep.
Now, the High Priest of guitar wizardry- Steve Vai plays something like 10 hours a day.. I can't remember how he breaks it down..but it's 3 hours of this..3 hours of that..3 hours of something and 1 hour of just trying to copy whatever he hears with his guitar (this could be the hum of the air conditioner, a dog bark or his neighbor's lawnmower- he copies the sound with his guitar..but then again.. this is Vai..)
yes..10 hours might seem a little extreme to you.. I certainly cannot find 10 hours a day to be able to do it, but the bottom line is if you REALLY AND TRULY want to be good at guitar, then playing and learning it will mean everything to you and the pursuit will go beyond a timeframe. You woud be in there for hours and not even know it..

Now,every few times you play the guitar..you will find yourself getting better, getting worse, or no difference. cannot tel you whic it will be, or how many repetitions it will take or for how long- that is entirely up to you, your style f playing and your level of determination.

Keep playing until you don't have to ask that question anymore.. you will KNOW the answer.
