The House Music Competition at school is on soon and my friend asked me to play a duet with her. I play clarinet and she plays violin. I asked my teacher if she knows of any pieces we could play but she said no. We just need one fairly short piece, maybe a couple of minutes long. (There's no time limit but people could get bored.) To give you an idea of the standard, I'm doing grade 8 and my friend is doing grade 6 or 7. (Grades go from 1-8 in this country). I'll have a look in a music shop when I get chance but I've got exams right now and there aren't any decent music shops nearby.

That's a really good question. I am eager to see what people reply with.

Flight of the Bumblebee or the Minute Waltz would be pure awesomeness!

edit - Actually, we could probably manage Minute Waltz, just not in time (with each other or for the competition). There was this guy at my school last year who was some kind of violin genius. He'd have managed Flight of the Bumblebee in his sleep. Well, almost. re-edit - Listened to Minute Waltz again. Probably not. edit #3 - Found some free clarinet sheet music for flight of the bumblebee. (It won't let you print it off but that's fine). I think I'll try it. Should be good practice on chromatic scales. One of my grade 8 pieces has some chromatic scales in the cadenza at the end at about the same speed. Sorry, another edit - thought I'd share that site. http://www.music-scores.com/. Non members can view all music but not print it. (It costs $27.50 to be a member). By the way, the skill levels seem to correspond very closely with the music grade system in the UK with level 9 being post grade 8. #5 God maybe I should just make another post each time instead. I found a piece that could work. It's for 2 violins and a cello but if I transposed one of the violin parts for clarinet and asked the music teacher to play the cello part on piano it could work. http://www.music-scores.com/music-sc...bafu2_1_strvn3 Last edited by missingsince1983 : 06-09-2007 at 10:03 PM. |

I think I'll use that piece in edit #5 unless I hear a better idea. Is it possible to transfer that music into sibelius (or some other program) where I can transpose it automatically or will I have to actually rewrite the whole thing?

If you can get ahold of a a midi file you could use a midi program like MidiNotate Composer to transcribe it and transpose to another key if you wanted.

Thanks but you have to pay for the midi files too. However, I just noticed a little button with a picture of a stave on which transposes the music for you. So yay! All done and printed now. All that remains is to decide who's playing which part.

Cool, glad you found a solution. There are a few sites out there that offer free midi downloads. A couple I used to use are mididb.com and one devoted to classical that I can't remember the url of at the moment. Try googling "free classical midis" and you should find it. It gives you like 5 downloads a day for free, if you want more you can pay a one time fee or something like that.

I used a midi site with 5 free downloads last year for the same thing (school music comp I mean) but it was total shit so probably not the same site. Then again, it could have improved since last year. Thanks for the mididb link. Looks pretty good. The amateur midis aren't up to much but what can you expect for free? The first one I heard was Too Much Love Will Kill You and the rhythm was wayyy off.
