Updated! Your recordings need to be recorded as wav files, and then converted to 192kb/sec or 256kb/sec MP3 or OGG Vorbis files. OGG is preferred. Anything less than 192 will not be accepted. And for crissakes make sure it's 44.1khz, not 48!
![]() Ok here's a new thread for us to focus on the actual collaboration and recordings. The planning thread is located here. To start out, here's the list of parts and people who have signed up and/or already contributed, and some resources you may need to play the song. This post will be updated frequently so keep an eye on it. ![]() To download the original version of the songs click these Aqualung Cross-Eyed Mary Here are the list of assigned parts, tentative contributions are in blue, so feel free to sign up for those as a backup. Aqualung parts: Guitar - Noname Rhythm Guitar - Noname? Bass - Aqualung Drums - Bent Rabbit Piano - Aristocrat Vocals - meanceprimeaux (?), Bent Rabbit Cross Eyed Mary: Bass - Aqualung Flute (or some suitable substitute) - Strings (?) Drums - Bent Rabbit Piano - Aristocrat Guitar - Noname Vocals - Reason's Gurl We may also need somebody to do flute or some substitution, if Strings can't. And here's the lyrics Aqualung Lyrics Spoiler for for lyrics:
and Cross-Eyed Mary Spoiler for for lyrics:
As of right now the drums for Aqualung are the only thing that has been recorded thus far, so here is a backing track to record to. When you record, please upload your file as a 192-256kb/sec MP3 or OGG Vorbis. Each time someone records a part, I'll do a quick mix to add it to the other parts recorded, and I'll upload that mix as a low-quality mp3 for the next person in line to use as a backing track. Please remember to record your track as a 192-256kb/sec MP3 or OGG Vorbis, and you may upload it here as an attachment. Here's the Aqualung backing track for the next person in line. I think we should record the bass next, so Aqualung(the username, not the song), it's all yours. ![]()

Ihave a question for you, Mr. Man. I couldn't get the first bass measure again. Would you be able to edit that in (in which case I'll upload it now) or should I edit it (in which case it will up tomorrow)?
Also, I couldn't figure out how to get it to record stereo through my set up. I clicked record in stereo in my preferences in Audacity, and the right track is just blank. |

I'm not sure what you mean by "not able to get the first bass measure again" Do you mean you skipped that part? You'll need to record the entire thing, I won't be able to "edit in" anything that's not there.
Mono files are ok. And I've updated the first post saying that recording need to be recorded as WAV's, then converted to either 192kb/sec or 256kb/sec and either mp3 or ogg vorbis.

Very nice and organized!
I'll have to work on this tomorrow. I'll be working on the main guitar. I may go poke around the pawn shops for a condenser mic so I can do the rhythm guitars as well. In the meantime, the position for rhythm guitar is still up for grabs for anyone who wants to take it. I could use a Condenser mic anyway. That. .and a PreSonus Firepod. . . and a Macintosh G5. (maybe later)In the meantime, I've got a fairly decent means of recording some guitar parts with a very basic Shure SM57 -> Radio Shack cable and adaptor -> Mic input on laptop. Its primitive, but it will certainly work decent enough for this project. I had a very silly idea about the flute. I dont want to take up half the project, but. . I was playing around with my guitar's tone knob, and actually figured out the flute parts to "Cross-Eyed Mary" on guitar. . .its pretty cool, rather convincing sound. I may record a bit of it tomorrow and see what you all think of it. |

An ogg is a newer, much better form of compression. It outperforms mp3 by a longshot. I use Goldwave, which has the ability to convert to tons of different file types, including ogg vorbis.
Aqua, your bass track does not sync with the drums. I'm guessing you recorded to the original song rather than the backing track I posted? You need to be playing the backing track and record your bass as you play along and follow the backing track. Also, the first split second of your recording is you jumping right into the riff, but as you can hear in the backtrack, you're not supposed to come in until around the 7.50 second mark or so. But that's minor and fixable, although requires some effort. The main thing is the entire track not being synced up with the backing track. I'll need you to rerecord it, and this time around turn the volume down just a tad, you were clipping in a couple spots. (clipping is when the input level of the recording exceeds the maximum 1.0 and gets cut off, making an ugly noise sometimes). Thanks ![]()

I hope when it's all done nobody will be able to tell the parts where I hit the wrong string/missed the string all together.

Actually you were way off, what you hear now is after I spent 2 hours editing it, stretching time, shrinking time, etc..
But don't worry about it because recording is tough when you're new to it, it takes a while to get used to. The main thing is that you're pretty synced with the drums now, once everyone records on top of you and Bent, it'll start sounding better as we add more tracks. ![]()

Wow, that's amazing. I guess the stereo was too quiet or something. Now I'm all sad.

You're welcome to try it again if it'd make you feel better. I could easily put your new version in instead.

Yeah, okay, maybe I will. I'll try it again right now, but if it's not better, it's probably hopeless.

Still way off...
Are you recording to the backing track I've provided in post #9? If so, why are you beginning 5 seconds late every time? And why when I remove that 5 seconds you're still jumping ahead of the drums or falling behind at different times? If you're recording to the correct backing track, do this... Record to the backing track, then open your mono wav bass track file, then "Copy" it. Open a new track in goldwave, select the left channel and "paste" your bass onto the left channel. Close the copied basstrack wav, leave the NEW file open. Open the backing track, hit "Copy", then close the backing track file, go back to the new file and select Edit-Channel-Select Right channel. Then click "paste" so that the backing track is now on the right channel. Now you've got your bass exactly matched up to the backing track. And if it doesn't sync up, then you've messed up somewhere. Record a basstrack that matches up to the backing track, then upload the wav of the correct bass track (just the bass, not the file you create to make sure they line up) here please.

Well, since the second was just as bad, even though I thought it was spot-on, and I can't edit worth crap, I guess we'll just have to go with the off one.

Also, I may be a bit off from the drumming in a few parts, but I try to correct myself, so it's really up to MM to judge it. I'll upload it when it's done. Possibly tonight...err...this morning.

Zephyr, great job on the groove. You forgot to play the last half of the first little break, but I was able to edit that in for ya. Good job keeping with the drums.
Aqua, practice the Cross Eyed Mary bass and you can still get in the action. ![]() Here is the backing track which is Bent's drums and Zephyr's bass on the left channel and the midi scratch on the right channel. We're now ready for some rhythm guitar, so NoName it's all yours. Don't forget to record as a wav and convert to a 192-256 mp3 or ogg. ![]()
