Hey I was wondering. Have you guys ever though of putting forum awards in?

I have seen it in other forums like: Most improved member, best moderator of (what ever year), most discussed thread, most viewed thread.

You know, member awards, thread awards, then some others.

What do you guys think?

There's no doubt that having competitions or recognizing a "best of" for various categories would be a great thing that could not only encourage activity, but also give our members a pat on the back every now and then, the problem though is that we've tried this before (KMA Music Hall of Fame), and lots of people promised to help out and be active and such. So then I put in a ton of time and effort getting everything planned out and explained to everyone, and within a month, there was so little effort from all the other members, that we scrapped the entire subforum and all of the KMA HOF sections.

I think that if you guys would like to do competitions and awards, there's plenty of ways to do it without the help of admins spending all weekend creating new subforums and mile long stickied threads. Maybe go back to basics and just use the system we already have in place, like thread ratings and polls. You could use those things to narrow down competition or select nominees, and use polls to decide winners and such. That would be my suggestion anyway. You guys put out the initial effort and we'll do our best to support you however we can.

I would be happy to try. Maybe have all the categories, then have people nominate others (Without nominating them selfs). Instead of making a whole forum we could post final results in the announcements. Thats my suggestion.

Or we could have a thread for each poll/category on a subforum, then have a big announcement on the results. Too bad there isn't a way for people to vote in the poll, but not view results so it would be more of a surprise.

What about just a Top #10 or a Top #5 of the most downladed songs ? You know, something just like the "Most thanked members" top.

It would have all the effects Music Man described, but with less efforts as it would be something more "permanent" just like the "Most viewed threads" top is.

With the HOF, I think that might have worked if given more of a chance. It's hard to tell from just one round how well it would do every other month. In that case, the trouble was that everyone voted for the same band so there was no debate. I personally had no particular preference so I don't think I ended up voting, but would have done if I'd known what to vote for (and if the results hadn't been so heavily in favour of one option) and I'd have done the write up if it was a band I knew much about. I know the write up never got done, but I suppose either people weren't sure what was expected with it being the first one, or they didn't know much about that particular band and thought someone else could do a better job. Also as far as I remember, no arrangements were made for the writing up and I suppose no-one took the initiative to step forward and take it on. It's a shame for all that work to go to waste; I think it deserves another shot.

As for this idea, I agree with MM. Best to see if it takes off first and build up to it gradually before setting aside sub forums and such that may end up ignored.

Start a thread with categories and ask for nominations then create polls for each. Perhaps just start with 1 or 2 categories and see if you get enough interest.

Well start one thread with categories first, and then if you get enough nominations, create new threads for each poll. Like I said, don't start off with a huge list though.

I think General Discussion would be the best place for it all. Personally, I'd put the rules and nominations in the same thread, then when the time comes, make a poll for each category. The final winner for each poll could be posted in the individual poll threads and the full list could be added to the thread containing the rules and nominations, or perhaps a new thread, whatever.
