Best riff ever? That's such a hard question. I usually don't think in riffs.

Yeah, the standard boogie riff as used in "La Grange" comes in many variations... and it always rocks.
I love the riff on Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom". It's the ultimate blues standard; nearly every blues artist does a cover of it sooner or later.

I'd say the hardest riff ever is building the church by Steve Vai, but damn it sounds good...

I guess Jimi really liked Billy Gibbons' playing style(quoted as saying so) and Author Lee and Jimi were old buddies from the day. How could Jimi not like Billy Gibbons though! 'hot stuff, coming through!' HEy Just wondering, are there many prince fans out on this guitar forum? First record I ever bought was purple rain (followed by 1984VH) Still will play those records.

The best riff ever? well, I suppose that one of the key ingredients for a riff to be good is it has to be hum-able, or have some way that folks can still hum the riff after the song is over. I can also think that those riffs that have left an indelible mark in the world of guitar- (by influencing generations of guitar players ever-after to play these riffs) would be higher up the scale than others.
So- just a few: Heartbreaker, Living Loving (She's Just a Woman) -Led Zeppelin or actually- thinking about the riffmaster that Page is Whole Lotta Love, Stairway- Since I've been loving you- ANY ZEPPELIN SONG has a great riff! Smoke on the water- Deep Purple Hey Joe- Jimi Hendrix Overture or "Pinball wizard" from The Who. American Woman (original version) The Guess Who just a few-

I really got to throw in Hush by Deep purple(riffy song) and "The Rocker" by Thin Lizzy. Hey, american woman and the guess who are rad! "No sugar tonite" is awsome! String bender; the heartbreaker solo is like no other solo I've heard! So effective!!

Tough One...
My first instinct was Money for Nothing by Dire Straights. The Trooper-Iron Maiden Zeppelin-Trampled Under Foot ACDC-Shot of Love maybe... so many sweet riffs It's tough to deny the sheer awesomenossity-ification of Iron Man... I had to invent a new word just to try. |

Definitely have to agree with lots being said here.. "Hush" is an awesome song.. excellent groove to it.
Nugent's "Stranglehold"- man..I was playing that one last night on my guitar.. had the phaser effect cranked up.. this song is awesome- fantastic riff- nice and dirty.. makes ya wanna get all nice n' nasty.. which is probably what Nugent had in mind.. Probably another good one like this is "Slow an' easy" or "Slide it In" by Whitesnake. And that opening riff to "Lonely Is The NIght" by Billy Squier.

Heard a little Collective Soul while driving home last night- made me think a little.. don't know the guitarist's names in the band- fairly decent when it comes to recoginzable riffs. When I think about it, most of their songs have become hits- and they all have a nice chunk of riffage going.. seems like somebody has dipped into Jimmy Page's "Grand Grimoire of Riffs". ..
I find it difficult when I'm writing a rock song to have not only fairly decent lyrics that people can relate to or understand the emotion- but ALSO to try and come up with a cool, memorable riff that might make future guitarists want to play my song on THEIR guitars someday... this has easily got to be one of the most difficult things to do. Probably more reason why I write far more instrumental works lately..
