So I have decided I want to try and record the live drums for my album instead of programming them in.
I have two cardioid microphones and a condenser mic.
From what I understand, I wanna mic the kick with a cardioid mic and I also want to mic the snare.
What I want to know is should I mic the snare with the cardioid or the condenser mic? And where should I put my other mic to get the best sound?

Is it in your budget to spend any more on drum mics? Maybe just another $100? Personally, I like to see drums mic'd with 4 or 5 mics. But if you are stuck with what you've got, let me know, and specify if it's a double kick setup or just a single and I'll try and recommend something decent.

It probably will be in my budget by the time I start final recording. I have been looking at picking up a new cardioid mic anyways. Also, the kit I will be using has one kick drum but dual pedals. I am using a friend's kit for this so I can't make any drastic changes haha.

For some good ideas on how to setup a recording with 3 mics, click here. They mention a lot of high priced mics, but the same principles apply and you can just substitute similar style, more affordable mics and get the same type of results.

If you find it in your budget though, try and get a 4 or 5 mic set made for micing drums, Musician's Friend or Guitar Center often have really good deals on these, starting at around $100-$150 if I remember correctly.
