Hi all,
I am new here, and am not a proffessional musician, however very passionate about music. I have a simple question:

Who is the better musician - Elton John or Stevie Wonder?
And why?

To me Elton John has magic in his compositions and performances. But how good a musician is he really, compared in this case to Stevie Wonder? I look forward to recieving your insight!

Let's have a discussion!

Welcome to KMA!

I agree with you. I feel that Elton John is one of the best songwriters ever. But I would say that Stevie Wonder is a better musician and a more experimental composer and producer. Elton John's music is kinda timeless and simple, and relies on excellent arrangements and lyrics. But Stevie, while a pop artist, strayed away from simple piano songs and tried a lot more things in his career. And of course being blind makes him even more amazing. But honestly I enjoy and appreciate many more songs by Elton John than by Wonder. So if I had to pick one as better than the other with no categories or anything, I'd have to give the edge to Elton John.

Straight up musicianship, I'd give the nod to Stevie. The man's very well versed at several instruments...and considering he learned them without ever having seen what they look like, that's pretty impressive. Elton is great with the piano, and comparing musicianship from one to the other on just the piano would be an interesting discussion. But given what Stevie overcame to get to where he got on several instruments, that's awesome.

Songwriting, that's a different discussion.

I prefer Stevie's songs over Elton's, but that's just me.

The better musician?- Definitely Stevie: Stevie has changed his style several times over -across a span of years. We're talking not only soft rock, but funk (Superstition- amongst others) jazz styles (my cherie amor) good old soul (uptight-everything's alright) literally igniting the music world with new concepts, new ideas and new ways of arranging- Stevie IS in many ways what I would call pop music's answer to John Coltrane. (wow- how's THAT for deep!)
Now, as far as who had more popular songs- Elton. HOWEVER- remember that the vast majority of Elton's most popular songs were lyrics written by Bernie Taupin- so you have to disqualify the lyrical aspect of the songs and go straight for the musical arrangements..hmm.. thinking these over.. a lot of beautiful piano work, but it's all major-to-minor in 4/4 time. No, there is NOTHING wrong with that type of composing- I do much of the same myself (just on guitar,) but I'm not hearing the complexities, the different timbres and tempos and no vast array of different musical styles- instead it's all about the same. Then again, I like OLD Elton- pre Lion King Soundtrack..everything after that time (and maybe SLIGHTLY before that time) everything started sounding about the same and Elton's voice started sounding a lot different- for one- he isn't hitting the high notes anymore.
Bottom line- Musician- Stevie..hands down.
Elton might not have even had some of the ideas he had for a song if it were not for Stevie first pioneering the idea..
Who sold more recordings and had more staying power- that would be Elton.
But then again...Stevie Ray Vaughan covered Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and that cranked..he didn't cover Elton.. (maybe it's just a Stevie thang.. but I didn't hear him do any Fleetwood Mac tunes so maybe not..)

You make some great points, including one that I didn't know...that Elton hasn't written most of his songs. Thanks for that info

Hey.. no problem! Yup, that's right.. Elton's best loved tunes he only wrote the music arrangements to- the lyrics were Bernie Taupin. Take a look at some of the earlier Elton albums. Actually- there's a book of lyrics, poetry and assorted borderline-dirty-minded-scribblings in a book called "Bernie Taupin- the man who wites the the lyrics for Elton John" I just happened to pick up a copy at a book fair a couple years back. If you look at classic Elton tunes- you'll see "Taupin/John" or something similar in the credits. I think some of the newer stuff is Elton John and Tim Rice (wrote lyrics to Jesus Christ Superstar amongst other musicals). Some dudes are just better at the arranging of music around somebody else's lyrics. Same thing with Meat Loaf- all tunes are written by Jim Steinman. Don't ask me how I know this stuff- I guess I was reading the liner notes on albums and rock magazines when I should have been studying algebra...LOL.

Same thing with that Air Supply song "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All"- NO I am NOT saying that I like Air Supply.. not really my style.. but I remember when that song came out I was like.."Wait a sec.." -so I had a bet (1 whole dollar!) going with some of my musician buddies that "Total Eclipse" and "Making Love-" and "Bat Outta Hell" were all the same writer..Yup!
(which -now I have Air Suplly's greatest hits in my collection -so I could hear this one tune.. -so who is the fool??LOL)

Since the question is "who is the better musician", I would have to say, Stevie Wonder hands down. He is just a great, versatile writer, and has proven his chops in many different styles of music.

For me personally, Elton John is a little more listenable on a day to day basis, though.

It's really apples and oranges. However, going by Grammies and other awards Stevie definately has Elton beat.

Stevie mastered multiple keyboards (piano, clavinet, organ, synths) each of which requires a different technique, as well as other instruments. He wrote both music and lyrics in a multitude of styles. He has produced himself and other artists and was a huge influence on the music industry as a whole. His career has spanned many more years than Elton John (us old-timers can remember "Little Stevie Wonder" the child prodigy).

Awards and recognition

Wonder has received 25 Grammy Awards:
Year Award Title
1974 Best Rhythm & Blues Song "Superstition"
1974 Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male "Superstition"
1974 Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male "You are the Sunshine of My Life"
1974 Album of the Year Innervisions
1975 Best Rhythm & Blues Song "Living for the City"

2006 Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals
(awarded to Beyoncé and Wonder) "So Amazing"
2007 Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals (awarded to Tony Bennett and Wonder) "For Once In My Life"

Between 1965-1980 a self-produced artist won an additional grammy as a producer as well as an artist.

Wonder has also received an Academy Award for Best Song for "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from The Woman in Red.

In 1989, Wonder was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He is also an inductee to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Wonder received the Polar Music Prize and Kennedy Center Honors in 1999.

In 2002, he was presented with the George and Ira Gershwin Lifetime Achievement Award at UCLA's Spring Sing.

He was awarded the Billboard Music Award for the Century Award in 2004, and was one the first inductees into the Michigan Walk of Fame.

Elton is a great pop pianist, writes good music for pop songs and is a terrific showman.

John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II on 24 February 1998, granting him the title of "Sir". The honour was for his charitable work.

A recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor in 2004, along with Joan Sutherland, John Williams, Warren Beatty, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

John was given the Disney Legends Award in 2007
