Does anybody here listen to Booker T and the MGs? My dad gave my roommate a best of cd to listen to on the 5 hour drive back to school this past weekend. It's pretty cool. Some songs sound a bit similar, but all in all it made good driving music, and Donald Duck Dunn is an awesome bassist.

What kind of music is it? I've never heard of it even vaguely, as far as I know.

Sort of a Jazzy instrumental musicy thingy. I'm sure you've heard their hit "Green Onions" before. Here's an audio clip I found on wikipedia.

Oh, ok. That song is pretty good (although I don't remember having heard it before).

I saw a special on PBS a month or so ago about the early days of Stax Records in Memphis. They were kinda like the Motown of the south, and a little bit more raw and funky than the smoothly polished sound of Motown Records at the time. At the time, Booker T and the MG's was their first big act, and most of the members kinda served as the studio players who played behind numerous acts back then when recording. Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes were also discovered by Stax. Otis showed up one day with some other band carrying their gear and got a chance to sing in front of the right people and history was made. Isaac was a writer for the studio for years before getting a chance to record his own album. And at the start of it all were Booker T and the MG's and a family owned record store and studio. The MG's were indeed an amazing band who were way ahead of their time.

If you haven't seen the special I'm talking about, I'd recommend anyone to buy the DVD from the PBS website. It's a peek at the Memphis sound you've never seen before, and a great story of how wonderful and how heartbreaking the music industry can be.

My dad recorded that special when it showed back a while ago. I never had a listen to it, but next time I head down maybe I should.

"Time is Tight" was the jam I always liked by them.

There were actually quite a good number of great instrumentals from the sixties. I have been hunting many for some time. Since they have no lyrics to search, it's challenging to say the least.

Booker T. & the M.G.'s first Album was Green Oinions recorded in 1962 it was on the Stax label, also I think the Donald Duck Dunn was the Bass player in the Movie " Blues Brothers " .

Lol I JUST came back from watching Blues Brothers back at my girlfriend's room. It was great, because it had been forever since I had seen it, and we didn't quite catch the first half, but as soon as we started watching I began thinking to myself "hey that guy looks familiar..."
