Hi everyone. Short ago, I decided to start working on my never-to-be-ready CD (since the G'n'R album will finally be out, so should be mine, no?).
The set of tracks I'm about to write now are meant to describe cold, loneliness, but I don't know if my understanding of it would be the same as everyone else here. What kind of music (on any style, of any artist) would you think about, if you are to listen to "Cold music"? Which music makes you think about a white winter landscape? I don't mean Christmas songs, but an ice desert, a post-apocalyptic nuclear winter, something like that. Once I get something written I'll post it here to compare with the ideas you gave. |

For me, some Burzum works really epitomize the cold feeling. Songs like Dunkelheit or Jesu Dod or even Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament (all can be heard on youtube) really sound icy and cold, but a lot of that comes from the production.
For instance, in Dunkelheit, the almost droning lo-fi guitar and minimalist sounds just help give a feeling of coldness and loneliness.

Yep, that's about the idea I had, along with some clean arpegios with tons of reverb/echo.
Now, their underproduction seems crappy, but it's really difficult to re-do that while recording! It always ends up sounding "too good" ![]() |

Yeah, reverb and echo really help. With Dunkelheit one of the big things was determining when one note ended and the next began. It feels like an endless icy plain. Also, when playing the arpeggios, it couldn't hurt to let them ring out to make it all a bit less distinct.

I've found myself drawn to and inspired by "cold music" myself lately. Here's a few songs and artists that I feel represent wintery isolation...
"Where Is My Mind?" by The Pixies "The Bastards Have Landed" by Logh, check out a lot of Logh material if you've never heard of them. In fact, I'd say that my recent discovery of Logh rivals that of when I first discovered Sigur Ros, excellent stuff. A lot of Elliot Smith's stuff is very cold and lonely "Song to the Siren" by This Mortal Coil "Give a Man a Home" and "Another Lonely Day" by Ben Harper "Amsterdam" by Coldplay "How Soon is Now" The Smiths "Space Oddity" David Bowie "God" and "Working Class Hero" John Lennon "Fyrsta (Untitled 2)" by Sigur Ros Might post more later when I can, but that should give you plenty for now. ![]()

So you mean physically cold and not emotionally cold?

What would be the difference? Can you provide an example of each?

Ummm... For emotionally cold I think of The Smiths, because a lot of their songs very cynical and express a lot of pain. As for physically cold, Space Oddity (like MusicMan said) is a great example.

Hmm, I'm thinking "Cold" by Static X. Despite the obvious lyrical connotation, it is a very cold song.

Hey MusicMan, you have awesome taste in music (Elliott Smith is the coolbags) but I wouldn't really mention Sigur Ros when listing "cold" songs. They're generally a very optimistic, happy band (and the song you mentioned is on the "hopeful" half of ( ) ). But if you were going to list cold songs by them, second half of ( ) would be very fitting as it represents depression. Sorry if I sound like I'm up myself, if I do well SAWREE GEEZUSS.
Anyway, Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division is generally pretty cold. Purely because of Ian Curtis' lyrics. Also, The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails is cold in a way I guess (the concept is about a man [possibly Trent Reznor himself] feeling as if he's spiralling downward and eventually killing himself, or at least attempting it). They don't necessarily give the dead ice landscape you were going for but meh. |

Hilarious, thanks for the laugh and I already like your style. ![]() And Untitled 2 (Fyrsta) for some reason makes me imagine walking alone through the mountains of Siberia with an air conditioner strapped to my face, chugging Icee drinks from 7-11, and then curling up in the snow to die peacefully. But I'm weird like that so take it with a grain of salt. ![]() Also worth mentioning now that I'm ITT again is "The Bastards Have Landed" by Logh.

...You're welcome? But I know what you mean with Untitled 2, I get that with Sigur Ros sometimes. They can be pretty misleading. Actually... Now that I think about it. Post Rock is generally very misleading.

I have no idea if this thread is even active anymore, but what the hell.
I think I know what you had in mind. I know plenty of songs that induce loneliness and just chilling thoughts through my mind. If you're looking for something a bit more melodic and less heavy, check these songs out: Iron Maiden - Remember Tomorrow (I mighty sure this is what you're looking for, just listen to it once) Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan Slipknot - Vermillion, Part 2 (there's also a remix called "Bloodstone Remix" which is awesome) If you want something a bit more heavy, check these tunes out: Metallica - The Call of Ktulu Metallica - Orion (Instrumental) In Flames - Moonshield (this one's melodic death metal, dunno if you're into it) I hope I could help, and good luck with your album! I'd love to hear it one day! Cheers. |

Check out some Anathema stuff on youtube.
Their lyrrics are dark with some nice melodies.. and the songs just flow. I tend to find myself in a trance at times listening to their stuff. |
