Well all the cool kids are doing it, so why not, eh?
My first recommendation is: Vintersorg (Folk/Progressive/Black Metal), especially the album Solens Rötter ![]() Awesome eh? I had first heard of Vintersorg a few years ago and while their Progressivey Blackish metal was pretty cool, it wasn't until I heard Solens Rötter that I really became a big fan. It has some sweet folk metal influences in it that just pushes the band over the edge from cool to awesome. The songs "Döpt I En Jökelsjö" ("Baptized in a Glacier Lake") and "Spirar och Gror" ("Sprouts and Germinates") are especially awesome. Both of them are on the Vintersorg Myspace page if you'd like to hear them. Unlike other albums, the lyrics are all in Swedish, so don't expect to understand anything unless you happen to be Brain (who is not from Switzerland). Also, there is use of both clean and growly vocals on this album, so just a heads up. It is some complex music, but that's part of why I love it. Each time I listen to it I catch a bit more. More to come, possibly in minutes.

I'm glad to see you getting into the spirit Dave, I have to say though I simply can't do the cookie monster growling vocals, the music is great but they lose me when the guttural vocalizing starts, I checked out Opeth's Watershed recently and loved most of the album, except two tracks with the growling. I guess I'll have to admit my age on this kind of metal, just doesn't work for me. I will check out all of your other choices though, one thing about the metal/hard rock world it's full of great bands.

But the music isn't too bad ![]()

It's been a while, but here's some more goodies.
I'd like to recommend Eluveitie(Now repeat after me, eluu-huway-tyr) (Folk/Death Metal). ![]() Trust me, you have not heard folk metal as awesome as Eluveitie. * Merlin Sutter (born 21.09.1986) - Drums * Siméon Koch (born 1982) - Guitar * Chrigel Glanzmann (born 1975) - Vocals, Mandola, Whistles, Pipes, Gaita, Acoustic Guitar, Bodhrŕn * Meri Tadic (born 1982) - Violin, Vocals * Ivo Henzi (born 1983) - Guitar * Anna Murphy (born 10.08.1989) - Hurdy Gurdy, Vocals Yeah, you read that right, in addition to your run of the mill metal instruments, you not only get a violin and whistle, but also quite a variety of other spiffy goodies. How often do you hear Gaitas or Hurdy Gurdys in metal? I've included some youtube vids for reference: First, Andro, an instrumental of win. No video here, just the song. And next, Inis Mona. Now you get a video. And Lastly, here's Slania Song. You may notice that the lyrics are hard to understand, or even figure out what language they're in. For the record, it's Gaulish. Yes, Gaulish. It's good and dead now, but here it is again. Eluveitie is a pretty newish band, forming in 2002 and only releasing 2 albums and an EP so far, but I see good things in their future, considering how great they're doing already.

Hmmm, a folk/death/metal band that sings in an ancient dialect known as Gaulish. How on earth did you find out about these guys? I really liked the first song Dave, the 2nd,,,well the growling isn't my thing, the 3rd song was alright, I wish she sang the whole thing though. I'm curious you seem to know a lot about Death/Black/Doom metal, why do they have to growl the vocals? I would understand if a couple of songs required that style of singing, but the potential to do more conventional style singing in combination with their really cool instruments would be totally awesome and I'm sure many more people would become fans. I'm just curious, I don't hate this style of metal I just do not understand why they limit themselves playing this brand when they could do so much more.
(I'm not talking about selling out or anything, just progressing and growing into all kinds of different metal.)

I always enjoy it when a band takes music to a new level. They compose very good songs, and pull it all off nicely.
If I DID listen to cookie monster growlers it would be these guys. The instrumental was great, and the last one was pretty nice with the female vox. |

Well, I know it's been like 2 months, but here's another recommendation: Skyclad (Folk Metal)
I'll cut the fluff and get to the meat of this all: Skyclad pretty much started Folk Metal. Really. Beginning as a Thrash Metal band, it was decided that including a studio violinist would spice the sound up a bit, and it sure did. Here's a few examples of their music: The Widdershins Jig, one of their first songs. And something newer called Do They Mean Us? Now you may have noticed that the singers in each song sound way different. Later in their career, Skyclad switched singers and became much more folky and less thrashy. Here's a few examples of some Skyclad songs that were re-recorded, to highlight some differences. First, my favorite Skyclad song, Spinning Jenny: Old: And the Newer Version (my favorite): And another song I enjoy, Penny Dreadful Old: And New: Which versions do you guys prefer? If you ever give a good listen to most Skyclad songs (especially earlier ones) you may notice that there are a TON of puns. In fact, some guy decided to catalogue all he could find. http://www.geocities.com/svipdaag/skyclad/skyclad.html There are lots of them. Anyways, to end this recommendation, how about we have Another Drinking Song.

I think it's been long enough for another recommendation.
I bring you, Optimus Rhyme (Nerdcore/Funk Rock) ![]() Now all of my previous recommendations have been for metal, so I figured I'd change it up with a bit of hip hop. Normally I'm not too big a fan of hip hop, but nerdcore is just dorky enough for me to like. Now I'm sleepy and in a good deal of pain (check RBBP's "Staying Awake" thread in General Discussion), so I'm going to keep this quick and just post some videos before I get back to sleep. First, what should definitely be the staff's theme song, Obey the Moderator. Next, what's probably my favorite song of theirs, Daryl Hannah. Thirdly, here's some live footage of a concert with MC Frontalot (more on him later). And I'd like to end this with a live acoustic version of their song "Sick Day" recorded at Alki Beach back in 2007. By the way, if you go to the actual youtube page of this song there's a link to a bootleg of the full concert. It's pretty great. Anyways, that's it for now. I might make a post for MC Frontalot later today if I don't get lazy.

Okay, so maybe I did get lazy, but it's time to make up for that. I give you MC Frontalot (Nerdcore)
![]() MC Frontalot is the guy who got me into Nerdcore. Last year a friend showed me the video to "It is Pitch Dark" and I was hooked immediately. Finally, hip hop that a nerdy white boy like me can appreciate (half-kidding on this one). Anyways, as always, have a bunch of youtubes. First, "It is Pitch Dark", the first song I heard. If you don't understand it, you haven't played enough text adventures. And here's Bizarro Genius Baby. Next, an important warning about our northern neighbors (With Jesse Dangerously and Wordburglar). And here's another one of my favorites, with Jonathan Coulton (of "Still Alive" fame). I also wanted to find a video of "Livin' at the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe", but the only youtubes are from Rock Band 2. Hell, I didn't even know it was on Rock Band. It is a good song though, and if you're a fan of the comic Achewood, it just gets better. Anyways, that's it for now. His website, frontalot.com has some nice MP3s to download if you want more. Not sure who I'll do next, but I'm going to throw out MC Lars, Schelmish, Venetian Snares, and Batmobile as possibilities. So what will it be, more Nerdcore, some Folk Metal, some Breakcore, or some Psychobilly? Edit: One more why not? Edit 2: Yeah, I think we need some Breakcore up in this bitch. I might get lazy again and take a while, but here's a preview:

Update time!
Venetian Snares (Breakcore) ![]() Now the music I'm going to embed here is probably going to be REALLY intense for the most part. At times I hesitate to call what Mr. Funk makes "music" but damn if it isn't some of the best noise I've heard in a while. His work is chaotic, cacophonic, and just freakin' awesome. In my last post I embedded "Hajnal" from Rossz csillag alatt született, which is really one of his most melodic albums, fusing classical music with the crazy drum beats and fills he's famous for. Here's another example from the album, Öngyilkos Vasárnap (Suicidal Sunday). It really brings a whole new dimension to Billie Holiday's version of Gloomy Sunday. Next we have a few of his less melodic and more intense works. First, here's "Die Winnipeg Die Die Die Fuckers Die" off "Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole". You'll notice that the melodies and classical influences are removed in favor of a much more raw and angry sound. On a slightly lighter note, the album "Songs About My Cats" is about kitties. I like kitties. Do you? As an added bonus, if you run the final track, "Look", through a spectrogram program, you get an added treat! Now on a darker note, this video actually made my lady feel physically ill. I suppose you probably shouldn't watch this if you have a week stomach then. It makes me kind of uncomfortable anyways.
