I was sitting chatting to a friend the other day and it got me to wondering how people listen to their music - ie. live or recorded, format, with videos, etc

I tend to listen to cds or vinyl or go to live gigs and listen in the flesh if I really like a band [I hate crowds though so they have to be very good ] I hardly ever watch music videos and avoid lossy compression formats such as mp3s.

I am attaching a poll to this thread with multiple choice options so as to find out

Well, several answers are ok here, since my mp3's are played by my portable player or my computer, and my cd's are played by my computer too (I use a computer as hi-fi). As for the live performances, there hasn't been a nice concert here for a long time, unfortunately, but I'm looking forward for any incoming metal thing!

At work we have a Fireball. It is a 100gig music server and everyone in the office has downloaded their cd collections on it. The sound quality is awesome.

I've always read that mp3 looses quality and stuff, but anyway, when I use mp3, I'm sitting in a public bus, whose engine is so noisy, that I don't hear the difference between a good recording and a bad one. Of course, it's not a cassette, that would be real bad, but mp3 is good enough for me.

I listen to music nonstop all day long, so i tend to bring a portable cd player around, but i need an ipod, but they are too much money. I would say now i listen to music on my computer mostly because it can hold so many songs, but i have a lot of vinyl records and cds. But my favorite way to listen to music is live, even though most bands don't sound as good live as they do on the album.

I wouldn't recommend IPods. Ipods are nice if you want to listen to songs randomly, or somehow maintain a database of your music, and you must almost always use them through this iTunes (I hate that, I prefer the old copy-paste on a usb-flash-key mp3 player). A regular mp3 player (avoid sony's too) has fewer options, but faster access to your music (just press "play" and you're done), and can also be used to move other files, not only music. And yes, you can get 2 gigas for around 40€ (I supose 45$?).

I like to listen to my music album by album, listening to the songs in the order they are in the cd. That's easy to do with almost any mp3 player, but the Ipod. But of course, the Ipod is incredibly popular, so maybe it's just me who is weird

I agree on the Itunes, i have no idea how to work that stuff, copy and paste is the way to go. But, Ipods have those 30 and 60 gigabyte models, those are the ones i want. (I have about 20 gigs of music on my computer) If the Ipod had the copy/paste function, i'd buy it. But at 400 dollars for 60 gigs, nah. even though thats a lot for an object that weighs 2 ounces.

Remember that 1 giga is about 1000 minutes of music (in 128k, a bit less in 192), so about 16-17 hours of music. Getting a 2 giga key could get you going for 3 days, without listening to the same song twice (I counted the sleeping time as "non listening" ), so basically, when you come back home, you can just remove some files and add new ones, what do you think? Or just every few days. I have about 15 gigas of mp3, but I just take about 500 megas with me, even if my player is 2 giga, just because these are the ones I'd like to listen to at that precise moment.

I go to live shows when I can, but I usually just listen to music on my computer. It's just so convenient.

I listen to it wherever I can get it. Usually that's on the computer or on a CD player when I'm away from the computer but I ticked some others too. I forget which ones.
