For me, it's a case of distortion and drum-slaughter mostly. Heavy distortion isn't necessary, but it seems to help. Also, oftentimes not playing in a major key is the first step towards greatness.

Distortion, a strong bass line that generally plays down low, consistently (ie, all 8th notes or all 32nd notes or whatever), and on the root note, and I think that's it...

Lol. I just said 32nd notes as sort of a joke, but I still think you need a fairly steady bass line. I don't know about palm muting, though. I can't think of anything that has that...
