Er, the full version of "Light My Fire" is only 7:07 as far as I know... but perhaps you're referring to some extended version I've never heard of.

As for favourite songs... well, all my favourite songs are over 8 minutes long
I consider Jimi Hendrix's epic blues jam "Voodoo Chile" (15:00) the greatest song of all time... other (long) songs which I count among the greatest include:
Deep Purple - "Child In Time" - 10:18
Led Zeppelin - "Stairway To Heaven" - 8:03
The Doors - "When The Music's Over" - 11:00
The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again" - 8:32
UB40 - "Madam Medusa" - 12:53
Canned Heat - "Woodstock Boogie" (Live) - 13:48
Iron Butterfly - "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" - 17:03
Meat Loaf - "Bat Out Of Hell" - 9:51
Pink Floyd - "Atom Heart Mother" - 23:44

Comedy option: Light of Day, Day of Darkness by Green Carnation. Over an hour long. Not my favorite long song (I listen to lots of long songs), but it deserves some credit.

LOTS of great songs over 8 minutes, many of which you guys already mentioned.
How long is Zeppelin's Rain song? ..seems pretty long and is good.

Pink Floyd: Echoes. -simply an amazing piece of music.
Iron Maiden: The Rhyme of The Ancient Mariner... another awesome piece.
I'm going to have to look closer at some of my cd collection..

what about songs that run into each other -like Beatles doing "You never give me your money" runs into Carry that weight, golden slumbers, she came in through the bathroom window, mean mister mustard ,polethylene pam (I might be getting the order mixed up- I'm not next to the cd at this time) -but the whole thing runs something like 16 + minutes long and is awesome!

True. The medley on side 2 of Abbey Road consists of a lot of brilliantly composed songs.

well, there are a lot of jazz songs that run over 8 minutes long- and they are great songs and NO I wouldn't call it "being excessive", stroking your ego or "wanking" because the solos you are hearing are MEANT to be in those pieces. I could rattle off some songs from Miles or Coltrane that are awe-inspiring songs that take you on a little mini-journey to some far away place and describe a beauty that surpasses words- but it takes longer than 8 minutes to REALLY get the gist of the musical journey/the beauty/ the message.. and I think if those songs were shortened to 3:30 minutes that something would be missing and the world would lose out on really getting the magic from these songs.

The "I" album by meshuggah is one continuous song, i think its about 23 minutes long. They have so many signature changes and syncopation though, that it really doesn't matter if the song is that long. If you like prog-metal and have any kind of attention span, go look for it.

I love M.I.A. It's one of my favorite ones by A7X. They used to be my favorite band a few years back.

Black No. 1 - Type O Negative
The Temple of Love by The Sisters of Mercy
A Little Piece of Heaven - Avenged Sevenfold
Toccata and Fugue - Johann Sebastion Bach
La Folia - Emilie Autumn
Mars, Bringer of War - Gustav Holst (We're playing it in band this year for our spring concert. I literally screamed when I found that out. That has been my favorite classical song since I first heard it a few years back).
A Gothic Romance - Cradle of Filth
Master of Puppets - Metallica (First metal song I learned. I was jumping up and down the first time I played it)

Rollover is such a cool song! Excellent jam.

Much of Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue" is over 8 minutes. Absolutely gorgeous jazz.

Frank Zappa wrote some masterpieces that were long. "Big Swifty" and "Waka/Jawaka" are two of my favorites. Oh, and "Inca Roads."

"Dogs" by Pink Floyd is incredible.

"Bros" and "Good Girl/Carrots" by Panda Bear are both lovely, though they're also rather bizarre. They take some getting used to!

Kind of Blue is one of my personal favs for when I need to unwind or really get inspired and look at the notes from a different angle. truly outstanding cd.
I highly reccommend it.

I have to say that the original form of Chameleon (Herbie Hancock '72) fits this category. When I was 12, I was waiting in the car with my dad to go into a Widespread Panic show.....we were early and he told me that we couldn't leave the car until the song was over (little did I know it would be 15 of the grooviest minutes ever!!)

I agree with Stringbender about the length of these songs. It really takes time to get the whole meaning of what the artist is trying to convey. Trying to shorten one of these songs to a standard 3 minutes would be like trying to turn a full length poem into a haiku.

That being said, I've always appreciated the style of Pink Floyd and get caught up in the casual essence of songs like Comfortably Numb.
