Greatest Hits albums do not count!!

Mine is probably Van Halen - Balance. That entire album just hits something in me. All of the songs are superb. The funny thing is, I prefer Van Halen over VAn Hagar, but Balance (a VAn Hagar album) is my favourite.

I'm not sure, I really like "The Black Halo" by Kamelot, but I also really like the first Demons & Wizards CD and "Master of the Rings" by Helloween.

I'm really not sure which one to choose.

As the admin, I have special privileges like not having to narrow it down to 1 choice. If I didn't have this luxury I wouldn't be able to post in this thread. I hate to even list a top 5 in order because my opinions change. So my special "Favorite albums of all time in no particular order" list is as follows.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Radiohead - OK Computer Nirvana - Nevermind
The Beatles - White Album The Beatles - White Album
Nirvana - Nevermind Radiohead - OK Computer
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

I posted them like that so that absolutely no order can be assumed.

I chose "The Black Halo" because it tells the second half of a pretty cool story and has all sorts of awesome music on it.

I chose "Demons & Wizards" because it is awesome. You take members from two awesome bands and lock them in the same room, and cool things happen.

I chose "Master of the Rings" because I consider it to be the funnest Helloween album around. Everything just seems so happy on it. I don't usually dance, but I make an exception for this.

Van Morrison - "Moondance"

Van Morrison is difficult to describe. He doesn't have a great voice, but he has a unique and compelling singing style that includes a charming touch of insanity. His lyrics are poetic and mystical, and their meanings are often intriguingly obscure. If you are not familiar with Van Morrison, give him a listen. You will probably love him or hate him instantly. I love him. This CD often occupies a slot in my car CD changer.

Here are my reasons.

OK Computer - is a lush soundscape of very different songs that cover the whole spectrum of music and themes. This was the first album I had ever heard that was really experimental but yet I loved everything about it. It's like they broke new ground and produced exactly what people had been waiting to hear for years. They essentially put out something that took music to a new place and was meant to satisfy their own creative curiousity, but as soon as it got released millions of people related to it too and it was an instant classic.

The Beatles' White Album is a masterpiece of writing and it would be impossible for me to say something about it that hasn't already been said a million times. It is a wonderful journey into the minds of Lennon and McCartney and produced some of the best songs ever recorded. It was ahead of its time and took music to a whole new level.

Dark Side of the Moon has spent over 1300+ weeks (25 years) on the best-selling album charts. (741 consecutive weeks from 1973-88 and many more now from 1991-today where it still remains). That achievement will never ever be matched. 40 million people who bought this album can't be wrong. It's the best chill album ever made, and the only album that syncs up with the Wizard of Oz . Enough said.

The Soft Bulletin is simply amazing. It tells a great story and if you know the history of the band and its members, you see how heartbreakingly personal some of these songs are.

Nevermind by Nirvana was the dawning of a genre, a loud shout made in Seattle that was heard all across the world. It was a shout that said "We are sick and tired of hair bands, drag queen rock, and heavy metal ballads. It was the birth of a new type of music that flipped a finger at the world and apologized for nothing. To me it seemed like punk music with an introspective aspect.

I'd have to say that my favorite albumn of all time would have to be

Dave Brubeck's Time out

The mastery of Dave on the piano playing in unique time signatures such as 9/8th (Blue Rondo a la turque) sends shivers up my spine everytime I hear it. The franticness of the 9/8th with Bruebeck at the keys, and then the melodic improvisation of Paul desmond transitioning the listening into an easier/more relaxed state before being launched back into the madness of a rondo in 9/8ths

12-12-123...

Damn... now where is my album.. I need some brubeck..

I've never heard much or any of Brubeck, but I've always had a strange fascination with odd time signatures, especially piano pieces. One of my favorite odd-timed songs is "Pyramid Song" by Radiohead. It constantly alternates from 6/8 to 9/8. Here is a link that will show you what I'm talking about if you're not familiar with it already. It's a great song

Yeah I find that the use of the unique time signatures in Pyramid song seem to give it a haunting feel, and is actually one of my favorites from the Amnesia Albumn.

I"m probably going to have to go with Rush's 2112. I have literally looped that album 5 or 6 times without noticing There is always something new to hear, and I just think it is one of the most wonderful rock and roll albums of all time. The only other album I think I've listened to as much is 'Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death' by Dead Kennedys. Not sure why I love that one so much, I just do.

My Favortie album of all time is not from my favorite genre of music. I am not even really sure why it is my favorite but for some very odd and strange reason it is... so there you have it.

Ministry - The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste.

My second favorite is .....

Rusted Root - When I Woke.

Niether of these reflect my true musical passions but I never seem to tire of them.

That happens to me a lot for some reason. In the OP I mentioned my favourite album is a "Van Hagar" album when I much prefer David Lee Roth, and Van Halen probably isn't even my favourite group.

Ministry... There's two groups called ministry, as far as I can tell. One is an 80s industrial rock group that nobody has ever heard of, and one is a modern group that I don't know what kind of music they sing. Which is it for you? I'm guessing the latter, based on the album name...

ok computer
i will not analyse
it goes together with my thoughts
no, it swims with them, it flies with them
no, my thoughts float on the OKC
they were made by it, now they need it
like being thirsty and being able to drink
it taught me how to feel what's hidden deeply
i am born again
and i analysed

Primus - Frizzle Fry
Dredg - Leitmotif
Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up the Girl
Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles

and my number 1...

Tool - Lateralus

This album is so epic, I find it difficult to stop listening once I've started it. It begins powerfully with The Grudge, and mellows out in the end with Disposition and Reflection. By far the best musical experience thus far in my life.

My favorite album. Hmm. Well all time, it'd probably be OK Computer by Radiohead, Animals by Pink Floyd or The Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse, but recently, it's In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 by Coheed and Cambria.

I'm going to be really really dull and pick the obvious OKC. Also have fond memories of By the Way and Bridge over troubled Waters. And I can't decide whether I prefer DSOTM or WYWH.

Actually DSOTM, to me, while the album itself I consider good but not great, in tandum with the wizard of oz which I am personally ABSOLUTELY SURE was the way it's supposed to be, is one of the greatest pieces of art, ever, imho. For those of you who don't know, if you put DSOTM on repeat and hit play when the lion roars his second or third roar (can't remember, but you can find it online-- I think it's roar 3, actually) the album syncs to the movie and does so the whole way the movie plays, or three and a half repitions of the album. Not only that, but thematically in terms of what the songs are about, it matches up... like "Us and Them" plays first when the wicked witch of the west appears and threatens dorothy, and then when the wizard of oz forces dorothy and friends to try and kill the witch. When the lyrics go: "forward he cried and the men on the front ran and died," or whatever, The wizard yells at the cowardly lion, and the cowardly lion runs away. Its astounding. I think it's the most brilliant thing I've ever seen, and too perfect for coincidence. (some songs don't sync that well to some scenes, but it would be impossible for everything to sync all the time, and every song syncs flawlessly to at least one part of the film)

What? Just one?... oh hell... if I was stuck on a desert island and could only take one album....

It would be...

Tool - Lateralus

Nice beats to dance around the fire too... nice music to rock out to... and it's almost exactly 80 mins long (8secs short) so no wasted space!
