Who's your favourite drummer? I'm quite the fan of the guy from Green Day, but for the most part I like all pop punk drummers. I also like Alex Van Halen a lot. Some of the patterns he comes up with are really great in his music. *descends into nostalgia* Ah... Whatever happened to big drum sets...

Neil Peart of Rush and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin are my favorites from back in the day. As far as modern drummers I really like Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews Band and Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips.

Pete Amaral, you can see a few pics of him on this page:
http://blogs.macon.com/amped/2006/02..._junior_b.html
Yes, he's usin' just a snare and a cymbal... when you're good that's all you need.

I'm also in to Bonham, Michael Shrieve (Santana's Original Drummer) and Danny Seraphim (the original drummer for Chicago).

I've never agreed with that statement. It's like saying if a guitarist is good, all he needs is one string. I'm sure that all of the truly great drummers could sound amazing just using a snare and cymbal, but I think it takes even greater talent to work your way around a huge set, and it definitely sounds better.

B.B. King started by playing a piece of bailing wire strung between two nails on the porch post of his childhood home using a broom handle to change the pitch. So yeah, a good guitarist only needs one string. Think about it... if all your strings but one broke, just before your solo... could you pull off a solo that didn't sound like it was done on one string? I've seen Alvin Lee do a solo with three good strings... he was messin' with the tuners, popping on the pickups and string lengths behind the nut and bridge to get sounds to make up for the lost strings. THAT's a good guitarist!

I've personally worked on a 30-piece full cage and I've done just a snare... my normal kit is a 3-piece. I can honestly tell you that a big kit is certainly no more difficult that a small one and sounding good, keeping in the pocket and being interesting is FAR, FAR more difficult on a small kit.

I think the two best drummers in history were buddy rich and gene krupa. one was vastly superior to the other, so they say, but they're both so bloody good it almost doesn't matter. my favorite would have to be nate from sunny day real estate, (I think his name was nate anyway), that guy is a-mazing... a friend tells a story of going ot see them in concert, and the guy's bass drum petal breaks, so he just starts kicking the fucking thing while a roadie changes it, never looses a beat, never even slips.

I agree with mammoth on the sunny day drummer i saw them live and the guy just radiates with energy, my other favorite is the drummer from THE MARS VOLTA the rythms that this guy plays in the time signatures that he is playing them in is amazing.

Peart I haven't heard, but being a drum fanatic he'll certainly have to be sampled....

Oldschool : Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, John Bonham, Bill Bruford, Mitch Mitchell.

New School : Danny Carey of Tool, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theatre, Martin Lopez of Opeth Mike Bordin of FNM... the only time they ever really let him unleash was the War Pigs cover off the Real Thing.

Niel Peart from Rush is an amazing drummer. I don't think he is my favorite, but when I think drummer, that is who comes to mind. I also really admire a drummer of a local band here, named Navi. He's amazingly fast.

Peart has long been my favorite.

Bonham just cause he used to pound the hell out of 'em.

Most overrated = Tommy Lee

what do you guys/gals think of Meg White's playing? I don't think she really knows how to play, (like i think Jack's going "c'mon Meg da, da, da, bass" tellin her what he wants her to play) but man she hits 'em like bonham used to.

WOW!!!
unbelievable that a drum fanatic hasn't heard Peart.

sure you have... Tom Sawyer..

what a freakin' amazing drummer. And Portnoy really earned my respect BECAUSE he could play Rush lick for lick. Haven't heard anyone else do that.

I would urge you to listen to the Fly By Night album as well as side A of 2112
you should have a great feel for him then.

here's a low quality copy of the Tom Sawyer song.

It's probably their most famous song, is the reason i mentioned it.

Remember, posting commercially available songs is not allowed without permission from the artist.

Thanks for looking out Jethro!!

Oh, it's alright I was pulling your leg. After reading so much about Peart on this thread a while back, I went out and bought Moving Pictures and 2112.

Fly By Night as well you reckon?

Your personal favourite anything is the Germs...

I could ask you what you wanted for dinner in a 400$ a plate restaurant... and you'd still be thinking "The Germs"
