A short history of Daft Punk

Pre Daft Punk

After meeting in a secondary school in Paris, Thomas and Guy-Manuel began experimenting with music at an early age with fellow schoolmates. In 1992 they got together with Laurent Brancowitz and formed darlin‘, a guitar based group that went on to produce four songs. A negative review dubbed them as “A bunch of daft Punk”, which would later became the inspiration for the name of the band Thomas and Guy-Manuel would form after Darlin’ disbanded shortly after.

The Beginning

The two musicians formed Daft Punk in 1993, experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers, they got their first break when meeting Stuart Macmillan, member of slam and co founder of the Soma Quality Recordings record label, at a rave. After giving him a demo tape, Soma Quality recordings would go onto aiding them in getting out their first three singles, most notably “Da Funk” which sold over thirty thousand copies.

Homework

After the success of “Da Funk”, Daft Punk signed to Virgin records and produced their first album, Homework, in 1997. It was well received and is widely considered to be one of the most influential dance music albums of the nineties.

Discovery

The duo began work on their next studio album in 1999, and in 2001 Discovery was released. It differed from the more rave oriented acid house and techno styles of Homework, and was much more Synth pop oriented. Many consider it to be Daft Punk’s magnum opus., it reached #2 in the United Kingdom. The singles “One More Time”, “Digital Love", and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” were very successful on the UK and US dance charts.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

In 2003, Daft Punk produced Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, a feature length animated film, produced under the guidance of Leiji Matsumo. They went on produce Daft Club, their first remix album which released to promote the film.

Human After All.

In 2004 Daft Punk spent six weeks creating their next studio album, Human After All, which would later be released the following year. It received mixed feedback and reviews. Cited as being repetitive and seemingly rushed. Daft Punk officially stated, in response to the criticism, that the name of the album spoke for itself.

Recent years

In 2006 Musique Vol.1 1993-2005 was released as a compilation CD/DVD. They also produced a remix album of Human After All, titled Human After All: remixes. They also produced their fist directed film, Daft Punks Electroma in the same year

In 2007 they produced their most recent musical release to date, Alive 2007, a live album containing footage from their 2007 tour, “Alive“, in Paris.

They are currently working on their next studio album.

Indeed, articles like this are always great to see, especially when someone so new does so well. Daft Punk are one of those timeless artists whose music is so unique, and so copied, that it's hard to tell when they originated...if that makes any sense.

Just noting that I had edited and thought I fixed the typo in the thread title but it still apears with it, not sure if it is my cookies, or if it can't be changed by me.

Nice article. This has pushed me to start doing these again. I got the time, but parents won't let me on the computer.

I think users can edit thread titles within 3 minutes or so, but after that you can't. I did though so no worries.
