I like it, am not a super-huge fan, but as far as I know funk begins and ends with george clinton and the p-funk allstars.

what other genre has a groundbreaking, incredibly inventive and revolutionary musician who goes by a dumb name like "bootsy?"

Parliment is the amazing and kinda defines the genre... But my man Rufus Thomas started it all, it's a shame we lost him a few years ago, great guy.

well, one band i've listened to thats funk is sly and the family stone, pretty unique sound. " Its a family affair" is one track i can think of by them at this moment, cant think of anything else.

Older style chili peppers, any thing from the blood sugar sex magik album and older has a strong funk feel to it. But they are a mixed style

The band Level 42 id probably clas as funk, but ive no idea what the hell they are, theres just some really nice bass lines in a lot of their songs. look up Mark king, he's awesome XD

cant think of anything elsew at the moment, but ill give a shout if anything else comes up

Nice to hear somebody mentioning Level 42- Mark King is an awesome bassist.
I have a couple compilation cds I got on Funk, kind of like your "beginner's course" to the genre. Lots of good stuff from parliament and earth wind and fire as well as average white band and War. I guess it really depends on the years of Funk you are interested in- the 70's stuff or the more 80's style (like "Let it Whip")

pappa was a rolling stone by the temptations is a freaking awesome song XD
and gotta love the song love shack by them B 52's XP

and i cant really think of any other songs in paticular that would count as funk

one im listening to just now is " The brothers cup " by the chili peppers, a really nice song

true men dont kill coyotes by the chili's aswell, also great, its got a nice bass intro, i cant figure it out, and i cant find a tab that sounds right either.

James Brown hands down! And Sly & The Family Stone, of course.

As for George Clinton and his P-Funk Allstars, I once listened to "Knee Deep" and I thought it sounded synthetic, prefabricated and lifeless; it lacks the raw energy of earlier funk and soul.
