Graham Coxon new solo album was a real surprise. Mainly acoustic based, Coxon displays his talents as a fine finger-picking, folk guitarist. The intricacy of his guitar work is impressive as is the magical world to which his music transports the listener. The album is indeed beautiful and with fantastical use of sounds, such as the sitar and angelic choral backing vocals on In the Morning, is a long way from the anthemic blur sound or indeed other acoustic artists that have come my way in recent years.
I would even go so far as to say that he wouldn't sound out of place on the same bill as 60s guitar picking legend Davey Graham. The technique is inspiringly good and backed up by the fact that Coxon has littered the album with some of his best solo songs to date. The subject matter is a man's journey through life from birth to death, with the Nick Drake-esque 'Look Into the Light' the ideal christening. The closest we get to the blur sound is the nonchalent and brit-poppy 'If you want me' and the infectiously catchy 'Humble Man,' purporting to earlier blur collabotarions 'Beetle Bum' and 'The Great Escape.' The album is excellent both in terms of songwriting and coxon's musicianship. If you didn't already know of his skills as guitarist, sonwriter, producer this is one to check out as is his collaboration with Pete Doherty on Grace/Wastelands. |
