Hi!
1.I've got some music ideas that i put down in Reason on my iMac. 2. Also, I've got some ideas on vocal part. ... and here i'm stuck. How to develop a song further? Just cannot figure it out - how to complete the song, with these my drafts taken as a basis? |

Try playing back what you have over and over until your brain and imagination takes it further and starts adding to it. Do this until you get tired of it, then take a break and come back to it later. If you can't develop an idea after repeated attempts over a few days, it might be time to just drop the project and start something new. You may have better luck developing a completely new project rather than trying to force yourself to develop another that just isn't yielding any progress.

Sometimes what I have to do is surround myself- or immerse myself as much as possible in whatever inspired the song or melody to begin with.
Example: If I am working on lyrics that are about love and I get stuck- start watching movies with a love topic or go to the art museum and look at works of art or spend a couple hours at the park-looking for that beauty or that inspiration and bring a pen and paper or a small recorder with you that you can hum into. If the works are of a darker nature- try watching horrow films or action films. Read books that are on similar topics. If you are stuck on the melodies or the musical compostion- ask yourself..what you have so far- does it sound like anyone in particular or are you trying to go for a certain feel or emotion with the music and then listen to similar.. if going for a sound or feel like "band X" then listen to "band X".. I find this often helps give me some ideas that I jot down in a notebook. Then when I can devote more hours, I go over these notes and try to piece them together into something that works and start working out melodies and chord arrangements. And- as Musicman said- sometimes you find yourself in so deep you cannot see the forest for the trees- and you need to step back, take a break and then come back to it and you might just see your answer. I will give warning though: If you are working on SEVERAL bits of songs all at once (like I sometimes do) and you jump from love topics to hate topics and others -so you go from watching a love move to watching kickboxing to watching some show on whales on the animal channel and read several different sources a night- you may become quite brilliant, or you might go slightly mad in the process.. which..well.. folks could say both about me..

Hi Ben,
When I'm stuck on writing a song, I usually think about the subject I'm writing about, and process it in my mind to read like a narrative. It helps to imagine your own story, with a plot- beginning, middle, end- then the words and phrases will come to you in order to write the song and bring the story to life. Hope this helps ![]() |
