Hi there !
I didn't know where to introduce myself so I thought I'd do it there/ My name's Lucie and I've been listening to music for quite a long time but I can't seem to get away from the 80's. It's like sometimes I lend an ear to new things, but it sounds to me like everybody's is kinda picking inspiration in the 80's and just make things sound different. Am I right? I don't feel very comfortable saying this because I don't play any instrument and I did not study harmony or that kind of things so I need someone to tell me were the 80's kind of pioneers years or is my perception wrong ? |

Welcome to KMA!
![]() I agree that there are many bands right now that are trying to infuse a lot of 80's sounds into their music. Some bands do it in a subtle way, others straight up copy entire themes and melodies. Some bands are just not creative enough to write original material, so they steal material from the past to make a quick buck. The good news is that most of these bands do not enjoy long-term popularity.

I've been on a George Michael/Wham! kick for the past...year or so. 80's music is definitely under appreciated.

Firstly, welcome! Secondly, Yes, I think you are right. The 80s had many pioneers. Specifically of synthesized music. Synthesizers were really starting to grow, technologically speaking. There were so many new things you could do with them, and bands used them to a great degree. Some of the innovations were terrible, and many got off on a tangent of thinking "we don't need to learn how to play anything but this one instrument". Most of them sucked pretty bad. There were some actual musicians, however, that were able to really use this new technology and push music to new boundaries. Vince Clark and Brian Eno are two of the best, but I think your perception is absolutely correct, and as MM pointed out there is definitely a resurgence of 80's influenced styles in today's pop music world. I'd say you have a good ear. |

I don't know who that other guy was, but even WHAM had some pretty fantastic songs, in my opinion. |

I'm "out of the closet" about being a George Michael fan and yes, I do get shit for it form my guy friends. So I just put on Amazing and tell them not to smile. They usually first: Let out an awkward and uncomfortable laugh, then: sit there with a shit ass grin the entire song. Haha.
