If I could find the previous thread for this, it may be easier to post there, but starting new instead.

Some people on this list help me choose a digital drum set to buy for my son for Christmas. I got a lot of useful information and chose the Ion Audio IED01 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit. Since my son is only 8 years old, I did not want to spend too much. I had to buy a digital set because we live in a townhouse, and an acoustic drum set would be too loud.

So I got the Ion Audio IED01 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit and put it together. There were some issues with the instructions in terms of the explanation to put the unit together, but I was able to figure it out.

I have tried to figure out the different buttons on the "brain", but the instructions don't explan what every button is for, and as I was trying to figure out what the buttons are for by trial and error, the pads stopped working all together. I can get sound to come out of the headphones by pushing different keys on the brain, so I know it is not a "sound" problem per say, but I can't get sound by strking the pads even though I could previoulsy. I checked all of the connections, so that is not it either.

So I guess my questions are as follows: Is there someone that has this unit at home and can explan how to use each of the bottons? Tye instructions simply don't even address about four of the buttons that are on the brain. Furthermore, why did my pads stop working??????? I realize that I could call customer service, and at some point that may be necessary, but I have heard that ION customer service blows, so I am looking for a someone a bit nicer to help me on this list. Sorry for the very long entry, but this is quite frustrating considering this $300 purchase was a long awaited gift for my son, and now the piece of sh*** doesn't work.

Thanks for any help anyone may have to offer.

Angie

Heh, that sucks.

Ok, hopefully I can be some help, since I was the one suggesting it in the first place.

The 'brain' of the kit is a slightly modified Alesis SR-16 drum machine.

While the documentation with the kit is a little lacking, the Alesis manual isn't too hard to find. Actually, I'll just attach it here, make life easier. It's not the exact same thing, as a few things were changed between the Alesis version and the Ion version, but it's the same basic piece of equipment.

There's also a troubleshooting section at the end of that manual, that may have a couple of ideas as to why the pads aren't triggering.

If that doesn't do it, let me (us) know, we'll try something else.

My dad took a look at what you recommended [the manual] He said that I had the "drum set" on 00 and that is why no sound came out. Well that seemed to be a no brainer, but now, there is no sound again, and the Drum Set is not set on 00. I am going to look at the manual again tonight. I will let you know what happens.

OMG this is so frustrating. I looked at the 71 page book, and specifically at the trouble shooting section. I see where it says if there is no sound, make sure the drum set is not set at 00. It's not, I checked that. I get sound if I hit the buttons on the brain, or if I just have it play a preselected beat, but still no sound from the pads. My dad is convinced I am doing something wrong. Too bad this instruction manual is so FREAKIN' long!!!! But, I just can't get the basic thing to work. I am going to try one more time this weekend, maybe if you really know how help with this set, I could call you on a cell phone? I hate to impose, but I am about ready to send this thing back.

Try and find the reset function on the kit [most electronic music boxes have one] and use it.

If it is still silent after that then send it back

Good luck getting sounds out of it

I just returned one that had the exact same problem. the buttons made noise, but only one of the pad inputs worked. I returned it and won't ever buy another one from Ion.

Rats, was hoping it'd work out for you.

I had scoured the net before I bought mine, apparently the flood of gripes about it hadn't hit the fan yet, as I found mostly positive comments with the disclaimer of "it's cheap" added to it.

Only problem I ran in to with mine outside of just learning what does this button do is one trigger was having issues. Ended up just being the cable, replaced it with a better quality cable from Radio Shack for $2 and haven't had an issue since.

I really don't have free time at the house, so can't really walk through troubleshooting it. I'd say if you haven't already returned it it may be worth a shot to call them, just in case it's something minor that's being missed.

If it's not something minor, then send it back. Here's hoping the prices of the good electronic kits keeps dropping.

Same exact problem. I thought this unit was trash, but have found the answer to this annoying problem.

*Warning! All personally stored data in your unit will be lost*

Factory Reset
  1. Turn the power OFF to both the BRAIN and the MIDI controller (the two powered boxes).
  2. Press and hold the [Play] and the [Erase] buttons.
  3. With both buttons held down, power ON the BRAIN.
  4. Release the buttons and power on the MIDI controller.

Your unit is now back to factory default settings and should work.

Found this thread via google, then found the actual problem.

http :// forums.ion-audio.com/showthread.php?p=979
(remove spaces)

Some users have reported having trouble with their electronic drum kits not outputting drum sounds when the pads or pedals are used. We will be happy to work with you to quickly resolve any difficulty.

It has come to our attention that this symptom is most often experienced when the IDM02 drum module is mounted to the drum stand using the incorrect set of screws.

The IDM02 drum module is packaged in its own separate box, along with the four short screws which are used to mount it to the drum frame. The box containing the drum frame contains a set of longer screws which are used to assemble the frame itself. If the long screws are used to mount the IDM02 module to the frame, the unit may become damaged and will require service.

If you are experiencing difficulty with your drum kit not outputting drum sounds when the pads or pedals are used, please contact us (see below), and our Return Authorization department will be happy to assist you.

I have a buddy in our band with the same drum set and the problem at first was the power plug going in. We replaced it and all was well but when we moved the set back to the room we started having the same problem. We are fixin to take out the board to take a closer look. Will let you know what we find. I am thinking that the piece under the brain has gone bad. Has anyone else figured it out? We are in Korea so it is hard to get a service rep and he has had the set for 3 years now. Thanks again!!

Ok, please help. Anyone found out about this "Poltergeist" piece of hardware. I have the same problem I was playing one day and stop working. I turned off/on and then worked again. Suddenly another day I was playing and stopped working...forever. I contacted the seller (this was from Ebay) and they send me another unit without a problem. I unmounted the old one and installed the new one. I plugged all the cables from the pads. Turned on and... same thing!!! how this can be????????????????? I see this thread is really old, but I cannot find anything on the internet related to this problem. I don't think that ALL 5 pads stopped working or went bad ALL at once...but this is the same problems in the two units, and yes, the buttons on the units work and make noise (voice)
Anyone?????
Thank you.

My girlfriends daughter has this unit and it has been packed away for a year. When we set it back up I discovered that the sound had disappeared. Everything I have tried does not work. The headphone set clicks when powering up with play/erase but there is absolutly nothing after that. the kid is heart broken because we can not just go out and replace it. After reading much of this I gather there isn't much hope. This one we purchased three years ago Has anyone been able to become the genious of this?

Yes, read my post above. You can do a factory reset by following the instructions you read there.

Did you try the factory reset from post #12? It suggests:
Factory Reset

Turn the power OFF to both the BRAIN and the MIDI controller (the two powered boxes).
Press and hold the [Play] and the [Erase] buttons.
With both buttons held down, power ON the BRAIN.
Release the buttons and power on the MIDI controller.

I'm afraid you're not using the same unit. Please match the exact model number of the unit to be positive.
