What do you prefer? Going to gigs to hear live music, soaking up the atmosphere etc, or chilling out at home or with friends listening to whatever you want on your ipod playlist? Advantages/Disadvantages of both, and opinions please
Also what are your best music-listening experiences? |

It really depends. Most of the time I prefer recorded music, but some things just really need to be heard live. For instance, when I first saw a recording of Focus playing "Hocus Pocus" live, it blew me away because it was so much more energetic than the studio version. Usually with things like prog rock, live is much better.

One thing I don't like, though, is when the live music is way different from the recorded stuff. I grew to like the artist primarily through their records, so if I go to a show and it's completely different I feel cheated that I'm not actually hearing what I payed to hear. I also feel like that when they don't play any of their popular or famous songs. The advantage to staying at home, aside from the obvious cost difference, is that I can choose which songs I want to hear and in what order. But there's something about that atmosphere at a live concert that you just can't get at home. |

Depends on the band for me, I heard DragonForce sucks live, but everyone likes their recorded songs. I personally think it is cool to see jazz players live, you never know what will happen.

I'm not a huge fan of crowds and slow moving parking lot traffic. I prefer recording but, if it is a small venue I will tuff up and go hear 'em live.

It depends on the artist, and on the song. Some artists are better live than in the studio, and some are better in the studio, and there are variations between individual songs, as well.
Anyway, the funniest live experience I've had so far was Dimmu Borgir, I think. I mean, we're talking black metal here, which means these guys were on stage covered with leather, studs and black/white body paint, and taking it all way too seriously. But a few months before that, I'd seen some "making of song X" video by them, in which they were all joking, and grinning evilly while biting apples, and one of them even showed off his bike - a small pink bike with a basket and everything... ![]() So, it was a lot of fun to see these guys be tough and shouting about VNHOLY BLAEK FVKKING METALL while having seen them in a less serious way on the video. ![]()

I love live in a smaller venue. Can't stand stadium shows. However there is somthing about recordings that is undeniable... I suppose I'd have to go with live nothing can really beat the feeling of the band in your face while you're with your friends drinking and other, but only as long as the band pulls off a good live show... I've seen so many bad bands live.

It really depends on what I'm listening to. Some bands sound really good on cd, but are terrible live and vic versa. I'm not the kind of person to say a band sucks because they don't sound as good live, as long as they're available in some format that I can enjoy.
That said, I hate huge concerts. I just like sitting in bars and listening to music over a few drinks. |

This morning I was listening to "At the gates". And I can say that they rule live, but unfortunately they're less good on CD (they're still quite good, but their live shows are so amazing!)

All your thoughts are really interesting...
Personally I prefer going to live shows but generally only if it's a band I really want to see that I really like. If it's just stuff I kinda like I think I'd rather save my money and listen to it at home. Last edited by alidasca18 : 10-01-2008 at 03:10 PM. |

Did you misspell 'occasional' on purpose for irony?

Nope, I'm just bad at spelling. But an occasional spelling mistake (or occasional forgetfulness about shift key, etc.) is no cause for alarm. It's only when people make a habit out of purposely flaunting grammar that we have reason to suspect that the people aren't willing to contribute to the community in a positive manner.

Well, it definetely depends on who the artist is but generally I would say that seeing a performance live better. The experience gives you memories that will stay with you forever, memories that could be rekindled in years to come upon listening to the studio albums of a given artist.
However, I have to admit that I am especially fond of a live album. You get to hear tracks of more than one album and you get some (obviously, not all) of the atmosphere through your own speakers. More so, in some cases artisit will perform a song differently live than in the studio and a live album allows the listener to possess more than one version of the same song. I would say that live albums that I consider to be of a really high standard are: Hammersmith Odeon, London 1975 by Bruce Springsteen S&M by Metallica Live at Sin-é by Jeff Buckley |

I'm a big fan of the live album too, especially as it gives you a chance to hear alternate or extended versions of songs you already know, and own multiple versions of songs. But I just really love the energy of an arena, you just get the sense sometimes that you're part of something huge. And lets be honest, how fun would it be to walk out onto a catwalk at the front of a stage, throw up your arms, and have 15000 people go insane?

The best live shows are the ones where you are blown away by the sheer genius of the musicians' ability to not only recreate what you've come to know and love of their music, but expand on it and let the songs grow into even more amazing versions of themselves! |
