Ok I tried to write something about the show I went to on 12-29-07 and had so much browser trouble so I'm going to try it again. I love going to live shows and seeing new bands so I'd like to share if that's alright with y'all.
Calendar page for that night I missed the first band The Serpenteens, which was too bad cuz they seemed pretty interesting. I arrived right as Future in Plastics were starting their set. They played a good set, nice and energetic but the music was kind of bland imo. Clearly their only draw is a semi-hot vocalist chick in a tight jumpsuit. Next up was The Johnny Strange. These guys weren't in the competition they were just there to play for us (I have no idea why) but they were definitely good. Both of the guitarists rocked my socks. The singer guy was pretty darn good also. The next performance, John McGrew and the Sitbacks was really impressive. This guy started right out with a trumpet solo, he sang and played keyboard throughout the set. The band was super tight and they really got the crowd started. John's emotionally charged vocals and energy on stage was undeniable. The crowd was chanting for one more song as they packed up. Ok so this guy Sonny Marvello and his band were the winners of the night. Honestly I think it's only because they came all the way from Scottland for only 2 shows which is pretty insane but hey I guess it's some exposure. This guy comes out looking like he raided Sgt. Peppers grave for clothes with a little red star shaped tambourine and red shoes and I'm thinking WTF? But he gave a great performance, great vocals, the band was OK but the songs were excellent and how can you hate a bunch of pale weirdos from Scottland? Incredibly entertaining. Maslow was my favorite for the night (and I'm not just being biased cuz they're from NYC ). These guys rocked, the music on their MySpace page doesn't do them justice if you ask me. The vocalist "Scoop Slone", reminded me of a cross between Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger, tight leather pants and all. During this set we were doused with beer and sweat and Scoop started humping a speaker at one point, fell down and started convulsing, and worked the crowd like a pro. Rock n Roll. The whole band was awesome. They got second place. The final band in the competition was the 2006 winner, 10 Year Vamp all the way from Albany, NY. These guys brought a ton of their own fans, who were all wearing 10 Year Vamp bumper stickers on themselves and candy necklaces. *shrug* The vocalist, Debbie Gabrione, has an amazing voice and not to mention was so smokin hot she needed her own fan on stage in front of her to blow her hair around. These guys looked like they were really enjoying themselves on stage. Their fans, who apparently are following them on tour, dominated the crowd for most of the evening and sang along with all of the songs. I really dug their sound overall. I'll be going to a show tomorrow and friday night, too so I'll let y'all know if the bands are any good or if they suck donkey balls. |
