So this morning I came home from school to find my mandolin has finally arrived. Does anybody have some tips or good songs to learn? I know we have some mandolin players in here. Help me out a bit here folks!

REM - Losing My Religion

And any bluegrass song.

Congrats on getting a mandolin, I've always wanted one. If you don't mind me asking, what kind is it and how good a deal did you get? I've always wondered if I could get one for like $200 or so.

Mine is a Rogue Astyle with F holes I got off Musician's Friend for (I think) around 70-90 bucks. It's cheap, and the top is clearly a wood sandwich, but the sound is pretty darn alright. Very bright and biting, which I like. I really would have wanted a Florentine style if they weren't so darn expensive. They're just so beautiful.

Wow that's awesome! I always figured they'd start at $300-$400 or so. That's definitely a price worth picking one up sometime just to mess around on.

Just remembered a couple more tunes for you too.

"Mandolin Wind" and "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart

"Battle of Evermore" and "That's the Way" by Led Zeppelin

But get yourself a book too. Something with a little bit of all the styles would be cool, Blues mandolin, Celtic and traditional Irish mandolin, and of course Bluegrass mandolin. Outside of those genres there's not a whole lot of rock/pop songs that feature mandolin. Hope that helps.

Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield

Maggie May & Mandolin Wind - Rod Stewart

Little Ghost - White Stripes

Going to My Hometown - Rory Gallagher

Going to California; That's the Way; The Battle of Evermore; Hey Hey What Can I Do - Led Zeppelin

Sylvan Song & Dream of the Archer - Heart

Dance Tonight - Paul McCartney

David Bowie's Lodger Album features Adrian Belew playing a mandolin on at least a couple of tracks.

Zakk Wylde also plays one on Pride and Glory.

And many Counting Crows songs. Although I'll have to listen again to pick out which ones.

Sorry, no Black Metal......

edit:
Also John Mellencamp added a mandolin player to his band for the albums Human Wheels; Big Daddy; and possibly Dance Naked too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been playing a lot of Irish jigs recently, and the mandolin came with a few books. One is full of chords and the other has all sorts of nifty things in it with lots of info for Celtic or Bluegrass playing.

And to Mr. Mean, I'll show you. I WILL pull off some awesome folk black metal with this thing. Just look what Cruachan pulled off with Tuatha Na Gael.
