Sometimes people bash me when say how much I like Meg White's playing.

In fact there was an untrue rumor that there was a Meg White sex tape circulating the internet, and people were saying stuff like "That can't be Meg White, that girl can actually keep rhythm."

I know she's not the best, but I absolutely love her timing, and how hard she pounds them. So I ask any of you...

Can you point to a particular track where she sucks or doesn't keep rhythm?
Are there Meg haters here too? and if so why?

I've never heard her do anything spectacular like a 4 minute solo in 7/8 time at 220bps but she gets the job done, and quite well in my opinion. Just consider how important her role is when the band itself is only a two piece band. I cannot recall any songs where she lacked rhythym, but you have to remember that the sound of the White Stripes is very raw and loose, intentionally. And Jack White has a tendency to control the show as well as the song, so if there was any song where there were noticable timing errors, I would be more likely to blame Jack for jumping ahead of the drums without giving Meg the right visual cues, like a nod or whatever. Wonderful band, and Meg is 50% responsible for that, so I think she does just fine.

I haven't listed to much White Stripes, but what I have listened to I wasn't like, "Wow, that rhythm sucks", so I'd have to say, no.

Well, she does play simple things, but she does them well, that's all the band needs. A bit like in AC-DC, there's nothing spectacular about their drummer either, but it works, that's all, so ... why change it?

have to be honest here. Meg White really doesn't do anything to impress me. However, neither has the White Stripes. I guess she does whatever is needed, cuz the White Stripes,, technical they are not. I'm not bashing them or her, but when I listen to music, as a listener and a musician, I enjoy music that I can say..."wow, check out this part......nice solo......, etc." They just don't do it for me. Sorry. I think she can and should do a lot more to help drive the music since there's only two of them, but maybe that was their intensions from the drums, since there ARE only two of them.

You are a drummer, so I'm curious as to your take on her playing.

I don't care if you like her or not or if the White Stripes don't "do it" for you.
I'm just asking are there instances where she's off?

Point taken. Obviously, I would have to say no. She's not off, and on point with her timing and as a drummer, timing is crucial. However, as a musician, an artist, it's a little more than that. How do I explain it.

As a "musician" I'm very critical of my playing and how i address the drums to a particular song, or a section within that song. Most non-drummers, will never hear the "music" the way a drummer does. What they do "hear" and feel is the rhythm that is created through the drums and the bass. On other bands, I'm critical of them as well. I've noticed that there are bands that are composed of excellent, highly skilled musicians, but the music just doesn't fdo it, and there are bands, that the music is simple, the muscians, mediocre at best, but the music, the vibe of it, the passion of it, is just incomparable. For instance, Nirvana. The don't have the most complex songs, but they all played with an undefinable passion. You can hear it and feel it.

The white stripes, not saying they're terrible or anything, they do have a nice raw sound, but to me lacks, that passion, that substance. Is Meg White terrible? No, but can she probably do more, absolutely. I mean, wouldn't you as a musician, want to play your heart out on each and every song, delivering that passion to the target audience? I'm not saying to showcase or solo, but contribute that certain spark, that certain type of energy into a song? I know I would.

sorry if i went off on tangents!

Well, I can't do anything else but agree with what NY said, but on the other hand, the results would be quite different from the actual White Stripes.

I mean, I guess these two decided they wanted to make a minimalistic band, and that's what they did. Adding "as much as you can to it" would be... like asking Satriani to play "smells like teen spirit" all day long. It wouldn't fit. It wouldn't be Satriani.

I've seen concerts by death metal bands, where, between the songs, the guys would simply go on some jazzy impros, just for fun. Of course they can do it, and it sounds good, but since that wasn't the point of their band, they just do it "for fun", not in the CD's or during the songs themselves.

Habey I couldn't agree more.

I think you nailed it right on the head.

That is PRECISELY the sound they want and they do it great IMO.

Thanks Dex.

Yeah, it's really all dependent on the vibe you're looking to creat with your music. I guess, to each, his own.

No.

I've played very limitedly, but have never had the time to really invest in a kit.

My friend and I had a REALLY long discussion about whether thats all she plays because it works so well, or because thats all shes capable of, and we never decided either way.

BUT I really like Meg as well, I'm listening to the stripes right now as a matter of fact.

ANYWAY, I saw them live in July, and she was excellent, hit really hard (which I like too, thats also what I like about the foo fighters, drums are meant to be HIT) and I can't remember her making a mistake ever. ACTUALLY, thats a lie, jack tricked her once, they were doing the kinda thing where every time he swung his guitar down, he'd play a chord, and shed hit some stuff, and then they'd wait a second, and I don't remember if he did it one too many times, or one too few, or delayed longer than she should have, and she missed his chord, and she gave him a wicked look and he just smiled at her, really wide, it was hilarious. But she never fell off beat or missed anything during the show, and she never lost her energy, and for what its worth she sang pretty well too. And my friend and I both really like her drumming, but we still make jokes about her, all the time, even though we think shes great at what she does and it totally works with what Jack plays. Something makes the White Stripes work so well beyond Jack White's brilliance, theres no way it could be ALL him, though I'm convinced its at LEAST 80 / 20.

I guess that's why our views differ on meg, since i play and you don't. but i'm not gonna beat this into the ground. your opinion is still much respected.

Additionally, I'm not a fan of the white stripes, so my opinion may be juuuuuuuuuust a little biased.
