Okay guys!

I've recently turned all crazy about the indie genre, and spend most of my time listening to indie bands, and looking for new. For those who don`t know what it is, then indie stands for independent, and most of them are signed to small labels, some of them have reached mainstream success like The Killers. Lately a LOT of band have got the label indie, such as Radiohead and the Pixies, even though this is a relatively "new" term.

Okay. So this is what I`ll do. I`ll hopefully keep on updating this thread with bands and suggestions to you, and if you find some new cool indie bands, if you play in one, share them with me!

Okay, I`ll just start off with some of my favourite bands atm:

Jens Lekman: OH GOD! You need to listen to this man. He is so brilliant. He makes very likeable indie pop, he is Swedish, but sings in English. His music`s got some kind of sixties-pop-ish thing to it, and makes you feel like springtime and summer all over your body, and makes you want to dance. Get the album "The night falls over Kortedala" Easy, good music.

The New Pornographers A combination of female and male vocal gives the NPs a very unique sound. I actually saw them live right before christmas, but the sadness of alcohol.. Complete blackout. Still, they make some great tunes! The album Mass Romantic is great.

Band of Horses I actually bought a ticket to see them in a "solo" concert, but they were also booked for Roskilde Festival, which I`m attending so I saved the travel money and sold the ticket. Where to start.. If you`re feeling sinister, if you want to relax, if you want to feel happy. band of Horses is your friend! They make slow, country inspired guitar music, that can really make your day!

Beirut Okay, this is weird. It`s actually just one dude, who`s the whole band, that sounds like a twelve piece balalaika russian orchestra. You wonder "what the **** is this?" and then suddenly the vocals kick in, and you wonder where the **** this dude has been your whole life. He`s 21-ish and makes the most fragile, and wonderful tunes you`ll ever imagine. The Flying Club Cup is a great album. I listened to the it nearly 100 times in one week. It`s fascinating, and in every listen you discover a new instrument in there.

I`m from Barcelona Yes, there`s actually a band called I`m from Barcelona. They are a 29 piece from Sweden. Yes, they are 29 persons in this band. It`s a whole gang of friends, that produce very light and cute indie pop, that makes you want to smile and dance! I love them! Let Me Introduce Me To Your Friends is an album everyone should have!

Okay, that`s it for now. Questions? Remarks? Bands you want to share? COME ON!

Tough job. Since, as you mentioned, this is reeally broad. It's maybe even more connected with a certain differrent approach to music and the making of it rather than a specific genre, i think. But still, by all means, it is a phenomenon. and worth focusing on.

Yeah, it is. A punk band could well off be indie. Or, some really hard rock band. It doesn`t have to be happy pop :p And there are thooousands of indie bands all over. If we share them with each other, it might broaden our horisonts.

Maybe you should given indie a listen? Indie can be everything actually. As long as you like it

I like these three groups.

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but when it comes to indie I really like dark cabaret. Voltaire is probably my favourite in that genre.

Agua! Didn`t expect you to answer in the indie cathegory. Can`t imagine why though. Well, okay. What does Volataire sound like? Is it like slow or happy or whatever? :p

(I`m sorry I've been such a boring bitch at the forums lately.) I`ve just been dropping by checking you keep the moral up once in a while.

Debate over what, "indie", is aside, here are some bands/ artists that I like that I would consider indie.

-William Fitzsimmons
-Rocky Votolato
-Xavier Rudd
-Alexi Murdoch
-Andrew Bird
-Damien Rice
-Denison Witmer
-Drew Danburry
-Iron and Wine
-Page France

Sorry, that's kind of a long list, but they are all good.

I have the album and I saw him live in Oslo this summer. This was on a festival in early August called Øyafestivalen. Lekman got much critical acclaim for his performance, and many considered it to be one of the headlights on the festival. Obviously a talented young man, although he's not one of my top favorites. And the album is a fine one as well. "easy, good music" is a perfect description there, yes.

I like Beirut and the Pixies of those mentioned.

I am deeply surprised that some of you haven't heard of this term until recently. Also, I'm pretty sure it isn't a new term--just a newly popular one.

I've heard of Neutral Milk Hotel AND like them. King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 and Pt.2 are pretty popular, I think. Might be good for a first-time listener.

I'm really starting to get into indie music right now. So I'm bumping this thread for my own personal gratification.

Also, Swans of Never are pretty decent. Last.fm FTW.

Band of Skulls. They just released a new album. They've got a kinda Brit-Pop meets Classic Rock feel. Kinda sunny though too. Worth a look.

Ra Ra Riot is pretty good. They opened up for Death Cab for Cutie when I saw them, and I was quite impressed.

They're playin' at Lolla this year, I'm pumped to seem them.

Good choice with Band of Horses (also playin' at Lolla), I'm a fan.
