Not only am I a fanatic audiophile (as my title states), but I'm also an avid reader, my favorite genre of which are books about musicians and music history (not only biographies).

Anyone else have this fanaticism as well?

Some of my favorites include Please Kill Me: An Oral History of Punk, which chronicles the punk genre from it's beginnings with the Stooges, the Velvet Underground, MC5, etc, based mainly in New York, and written by using exerpts from old interviews with the musicians and scenesters of the time.

We Got the Neutron Bomb, written in the same way and same time frame of Please Kill Me, but chronicling the punk scene in LA.

Lexicon Devil: The Fast Times and Short Life of Darby Crash and the Germs.

And Motley Crue's The Dirt.

Whether you're into punk music or not, I HIGHLY recommend these books, especially Please Kill Me, which I've personally read 11 times since I bought it two years ago.

What about you guys?

I read "The Long Hard Road Out of Hell", Marilyn Manson's autobiography. It was quite interesting to say the least. He really had a strange childhood. I really have lost interest in his music since Antichrist Superstar. He seems like a pretty smart guy and has some great ideas, I wish he would indulge us with another book.

Hmm.. I haven't read it. I've passed by it many times on my regular book buying sprees, but have never bought it. Maybe I'll give it a try. I'll let you know what I think when, and if, I do get it (or find someone to borrow it off of).

Tony Levin's biography was a great read. As well as talking about his history as a musician, he talks about himself and how he became a musician, as well as some techniques for the bass.

It also comes with a great recipe for carrot cake. It's even better that I know him personally and talk to him regularly. Nice guy he is.

The only music related book i've ever read was 'Moon The Loon' by Dougal Baxter, it's about the insane antics of Keith Moon, read it when i was fifteen.
it's about Mr. Moon taking copious amounts of drugs, sleeping with many women, buying lots of flash cars and some desperate attempts to kill himself........

I read "Cash" by Johnny Cash. This is one of my favorite books. He covers his whole life and let me tell i am not so sure that i would want the life that he had until the last twenty years. Great book though I would suggest to anyone even if you aren't a fan.

Only books like this that I've read are all about The Doors and Jim Morrison -- I was quite obsessed with them when I was a kid. I think I'll read Please Kill Me... 11 times is a lot to read a book if it sux so it must be very good! Thanks for the suggestion Circle. LOL... I wish some of today so-called punk rockers would read a book like Please Kill Me. LOL...

Does anybody know of a great encyclopedia of music that happens to include rock/pop/industrial/alt./etc. groups from the 70s to the present?

The first book that i ever ever read was actually... "John Lennon: The Lost Weekend" by: his "mistress" secretary May Pang. It was actually pretty good. It was my first book and I read it in a day.

I know a few years back Rolling Stone put out a revised edition of their Encyclopedia of Rock n Roll, and it covers Rock, Pop, Rap, etc, though I'm not sure if it covers industrial and other such genres.

I also know of an Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal...

Amen sister, amen!

But yeah, I totally reccommend that book, and when you get through it, I suggest checking out We Got The Neutron Bomb, it's just as good as Please Kill Me, but the only reason I haven't read it as much as I have the other, is because I'm kind of partial to the New York scene (though oddly enough, my absolute favorite band is from LA...)
