Hey musicians,
I'm curious to know how you see your relationship with your instrument! Could you describe this relationship to me? As a (classical) musician myself, I believe that the feeling/intuition that my instrument has become part of myself is an important condition for the expressiveness of my performance. It allows me to expressively communicate during performance the musical ideas that I find in a score. I did a theoretical study on the relationship between musician and musical instrument for my master thesis in philosophy. And now I continue this as part of my PhD in musicology. My PhD project is about embodied music cognition an instrumental music education. So, please, can you describe your relationship with your instrument (and maybe specify if you are a professional musician or not, and wich instrument you play)? Thank you very much! Where are you studying? I generally agree, that after enough training, a musical instrument becomes an extension of your soul and voice.

Cool. I had a look at this page from your school's website, and I'm pleased to see a nice variety of research projects, past and present, taking place there. You're welcome to seek opinions and such here at KMA. So feel free to pose more questions and start more discussions here anytime.

As a guitarist, singer and songwriter my relationship with my guitars is pretty deep. I consider that matter and the very universe itself is all different vibrations at different speeds- in essence..it is all music -and for those brief moments when I play I become one with the guitar, one with the music, one with the very vibrations that make up space, time, God and the very universe itself. Does this relationship help me play with more expression- yes,
I am sure that it does. However, as an improvisational guitar soloist (many of my recordings and live performances the solos are improvised on the spot) I also believe that I attune myself deeper to the very vibe and essence of the piece of music (which is not just hearing or listening to the music) and then I play or express what I believe the music needs at that instant. Sometimes- this also means that the music demands that it NOT be very expressive. My level of playing, singing, songwriting and recording: Professional, but not always paid as a professional- have done this for many years and more than many other things in my life. Style? mostly Rock, but also some jazz, country (at times) and blues. good luck with this and I hope this helps!
