I've already read the guide, which while very nice, has not been enough for me to decide on.

I am trying to decide what to buy. I have about $200 and I can scrounge together some more without much trouble. What I'm looking for is either a recommendation on either a solid-body electric or a classical guitar. I would use the electric for heavy metal thunder purposes, and the classical for my interactions with "the ladies."

In short:
~$200 preferably.
Classical or Electric
If electric, have a nice metal tone.

Any recommendations?

Probably can't get a really good electric for $200 with a metal tone. Metal sounds tend to need to be sought after in different manners. An Ibanez Iceman, though, can get pretty close. Or an RG.

Classical guitar... eeh.. That's really difficult with that budget. It won't sound good, but anything int aht price range will sound about the same.

I suggest looking on ebay. If you want a nice 'metal tone', go for a Jackson guitar. Most of them are good metal guitars. Or, you could just buy some EMG pickups and put them in a guitar you already own, which should add quite a bit of power to any guitar. I always wanted to get a Deluxe Telecaster and fit it with some EMGs.

But honestly, you could get a 'metal' tone with the right pedals and or amps. I have a metal Zone pedal, and it adds quite a bit of oompf to any guitar.

As far as classicals go, you could find a cheap one. go to a local guitar shop of check out Musicians Friend or any other guitar catalogue.

Godin Freeway and Detours both start around $290 American made with nice hot humbuckers and the best feeling neck you can get outside of a custom job.

So...cheap...

I feel as though something must be terribly wrong at those prices.

Check out some of their reviews, they're generally really good.
Just look at the specs too, they're rather nice.

I'll be heading up to guitar center in about a week for my b-day (go me). Does anyone have any quick last recommendations on an electric?

Spend plenty of time there and if you don't find a guitar that feels good in your hands and sounds good to your ears, keep looking. Take a close look at the neck and action levels and make sure the bridge hasn't been jacked up to prevent fret buzz due to poor manufacturing or shipping damage. Try and find the lowest action you can find that is low over the whole fretboard, not angled so that above the 12th fret the strings are a 1/4" off the fretboard.

Congrats on the B-day present, and good luck finding something you enjoy.

Well, my friend has a really nice Squier Stratdealy that's nice and awesome, and within my budget too. I'm definitely going to check those out. Do you know if they have any color variations?

"Zephyr

Ok Zephyr, it may be time to change the usertitle. A lot of people have mentioned it and it's easy to get the wrong idea if you don't know the gimmick.

RG's are the almost standard of the shred guitar world. Try E-Bay for around $200 (good luck). I had an RG570 years ago and I regret that I got rid of it. It was an exetremely versatile guitar.

You should stay away from any guitars that only have single coil pickups if you want to have a real heavy sound. Some 'metal' players have used them, but in general the are to 'bright' sounding. Humbuckers are the way to go for that tick "Heavy Metal Thunder" sound.
