Hey, I'm new to this forum. I write music, but haven't recorded anything stellar as of yet.
Just built a small home studio and am getting used to everything.
Anyone wanna chat about music or favorite women artists?

Female artists? Well, there are only a few I know...

-Girlschool
-Nina Hagen
-Janis Joplin
-Aretha Franklin

Can't think of any other good female artists.

Or perhaps you really just want to talk about Beverley Mahood. Remember, multiple user accounts for the same person are not allowed.

Uncut Rubber, do you seriously only like four female artists? Sheesh.

As for me...define female artist. Does she have to be solo, can she/they be in a band that also includes guys...? It seems like they shouldn't be excluded if they are also in a band with guys, because they're still female and still artists. Anyway, here are some of the artists that I like that are either all-girls bands, solo acts, or have a lead singer that is a chick:

Sleater-kinney, Le Tigre, April March, Bjork, Blonde Redhead (actually they have two lead singers, but it's best when she sings), Cat Power, Coco Rosie, Deerhoof, Imogen Heap, Ladytron, Portishead, Peaches, Sneaker Pimps (when whatsherface was with them), Solex, Yeah Yeah Yeahs...etc.

And second Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin...I don't know the other ones you mentioned, though.

I heard Joni Mitchell for the first time yesterday, and I've already listened to her album Blue five times I've loved it so much. I also recently have gotten into old female jazz vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and the like. Then of course Janis Joplin is great. I'm sure there's more, but that's what just popped into my head off the bat.

Beth Gibbons of Portishead put trip-hop on the musical map and her haunting melodies and wails are timeless.

Annie Lennox is pure soulful brilliance.

Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders is amazing.

Nobody has ever sung the blues quite like Janis Joplin could, male or female.

Enya is so good (at least on an album, maybe not live) I was once listening to Paint the Sky With Stars in my car as a teenager and it put me in a trance and I got into a wreck. And ever since that day I've never listened to Enya while driving out of fear of the same results happening again.

And as much as I may hate her music, early Mariah Carey stuff contain some extremely impressive vocal performances.

I know I've already said it, but after letting it sit, I have to say it again: I absolutely love Joni Mitchell. Blue in it's entirety is probably one of the most beautiful, and sad, albums I've ever heard; there really aren't any words to express it. It has just became a staple in my life like it seems to be in yours. I am looking to get more of her albums though, like Court and Spark, since I have only heard Blue so far.

As for Nina Simone and Etta James, I'm actually unaware of either. I just quickly looked into both and am definately interested. Do you have any suggestions of what I should listen to first, whether it be an album or something else? I would more then gladly listen to any suggestions you may have.

Girlschool is an all-female NWOBHM band. They could be compared to Judas Priest or Saxon, I think.

Nina Hagen is a German punk artist from the late seventies. She can sing very well, you should check out her tracks "T.V.-Glotzer" and "Unbeschreiblich Weiblich".

For a few months, i listened to Blue non stop. Just got it on vinyl this year and it is my go to sad album and i'm sure it always will be. I remember crying my eyes out listening to a case of you over and over...
hahahaha
You should definitely check out Joni's Heijira, I think she did it right after blue, if i am not mistaken. but theres a lot of blue elements in it and its really really amazing. I have to be honest, I love all joni mitchell, but nothing compares to Blue for me. Joni, or anyone else. Many would disagree, but for me this album hits me so hard, it can't compare with anything.
BUT! everything is still amazing. I love Heijira, the hissing of summer lawns, and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. I Stupidly missed the joni mitchell visual art showing in Toronto. I'm still kicking myself.

As for Etta James, Get "At Last". some of her stuff will absolutely ring a bell. Nina Simone's Anthology is full of everything. I really really love "funkier than a mosquitos tweeter" (song).a.nd i always always have. Jeff Buckley used to cover a lot of her stuff. I just remembered another staple: Dusty Springfield. Have you heard her? She's incredible. Check out the album "Dusty in Memphis". its a goodie. Son of a preacher man!

I'm still thinking. let me go through my itunes.

I'm a big fan of Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays. She has a truly unique voice. Also Natalie Merchant in her 10,000 Maniacs days although I thought her solo stuff kinda sucked.

You know it's funny you say that because that's possibly my favorite track on the album. I can't count how many times I've heard it recently. Some of the lyrics are so incredibly touching, like....

I remember that time you told me, you said
love is touching souls
surely you touched mine
cause part of you pours out of me
in these lines from time to time

When I heard that, it completely blew me away. The way she sings "you are in my blood like holy wine," really moves me too; the hair on my neck stands up everytime. Actually to be honest, Joni might actually be the best writer I've ever read. I used to think it was Thom Yorke, but after hearing Blue, I'm not sure.

I have to agree, it stands alone. I wouldn't say it's my favorite album of all time, but I certainly couldn't pick anything that compares to it; it's a completely different kind of beautiful.

Man...I could've gone to that, only I didn't know about it and only got into Joni recently. Next time I guess. Either way, I will be sure to check ou those albums, probably Heijira first since you mentioned it's got a lot of Blue elements in it.

Cool, take your time. I haven't heard Dusty Springfield sadly, but I will have to check her out, along with everything else you just mentioned.

I've never really listened to Joni that much at all, not sure why. But lyrics as honest and personal as those, and the fact that you commited treason by putting someone on Thom Yorke's pedestal, has convinced me to check out "Blue". Thanks to you and usicmalove for the recommendation.
