(I took out the links - you'll have to do the googling yourself)
I found Richie Syrett through this trashed thread(link removed) today, and while I understand the reasons for the trashing, I also never give up an opportunity to find a new band, and this guy isn't too bad. They're on last.fm(link removed) with their whole album available as full tracks. The sound has a pretty typical folk rock/country vibe - for me it is strongly reminiscent of The BoDeans, though quite a bit more mellow than tracks like "She's a Runaway". I wouldn't buy a whole album, though. As I was listening to the Myspace playlist, it took me a while to realize that the playlist had moved on to the next song: I thought it had repeated the previous song, the sound was so similar. But hey, people like ZZ Top, and there's little distinction between their songs either. On the other hand, ZZ Top has pretty advanced instrumentation, and the folk rock instrumentation of Richie Syrett was pretty average. The vocals, though, are a strong point. The chorus/harmonization on the vocals sounds really sweet. So, all in all, I think Richie Syrett is a good "Myspace band", to be listened to for a few minutes in your browser, but but if I'm ever going to buy an album I'm going to have to see more differentiation between their songs and a little more innovation in the musicality. |

That was a much better synopsis of this artist than the OP of the trashed thread offered ie..."anyone heard of him? he's good"
But it sounds like his mediocrity so typically found on Myspace won't generate enough interest for me to go listen to his stuff. Thanks for sharing your opinions. ![]()

Oh well, maybe somebody is looking for some new folk rock type stuff and doesn't care if the artist is ground breaking, as long as they sound good. Hopefully this isn't a hugely "avant guarde" forum and there will be a place to discuss musicians who don't break ground but at least provide some pleasure to the listener.

Nice review. I will probably check them out soon. I have this list of bands I still need to look at that people have recommended.

Thanks for your previous comments. I appreciate your views.
There is footage from a recent gig of Richie Syrett in SOHO (on youtube). This artist has now sold several thousand copies of his album worldwide and has quite a cult following. Again I welcome the thoughts of your readers: Thanks. Chris. |
