Just saw a documentary all about Sigur Ros - a band I first heard of on here. Well I say saw, I actually had it on in the background whilst I was on here. I did find out that the music on all of the BBC logo things (for want of a better word) is by Sigur Ros. (The BBC is the largest main television channel in the UK and by 'logo things' I mean the clips they play at the end of each ad break).

Wow, cool. I had no idea.

So do you mean something like this is done by Sigur Ros?

I think they're called "break bumpers".

Did the documentary mention anything else interesting about the band?

No, more like this.

I think I might have been a bit mixed up. I've seen the advert many times and, not paying all that much attention during the adverts, thought it was (a very long) one of those break bumpers. Apparently it's actually an advert for a programme called Planet Earth which is shown on the BBC. Over here, adverts relating to the channel itself are played towards the end of the breaks and because this one doesn't have anything saying which programme it's advertising for the majority of it, I assumed it was advertising the channel itself.

Their music has also been used on adverts for Oxfam, football and a film here so it's very familiar to the general public even though the name of the band itself isn't.

That's what stood out the most to me. There were lots of clips of the band playing (as is to be expected) and the presenter was talking about how they take simple ideas and expand them and that kind of thing. Then of course there were bits of interviews.

(Edit - forgot how to do those youtube tags yet again)

Edit #2 - Was watching the above video again and I have a feeling that music's been used for Panorama adverts or some other documentary show as well. Seems to be incredibly popular among British advertisers.

They aired it over here on the Discovery Channel and I remember it having a Sigur Ros song on it.

Cool! Nice to see Sigur Ros getting some good exposure, I would have loved to see the documentary. The only BBC stuff I see is on PBS (the U.S. version of public TV). And they always show this logo that has a castle and lake or moat with a huge spinning 3D red globe hovering above it. I've probably lost my marbles but that logo thingy is so friggin mesmerizing, I'm like a moth staring at a porch light when that damn things comes on lol. OMG I wish there was some type of screensaver that had that on it! No that'd be a bad idea because I would completely stop using the PC and I'd never get anything done online.

Oh well I'll stop rambling now and go take my meds that the nurse lady at the nervous hospital gave me.

Well to you yes, but not to people unfamiliar with Sigur Ros. I think when I first joined this forum, after seeing all the users recommending them, I might have listened to a few tracks by them. I didn't realise that music was by them though - particularly seeing as the versions played on TV are generally instrumentals. (That youtube video is of course much longer than the version usually played in the ad breaks.) Speaking of which, that video is amazing. I think it just might have inspired me to go watch Planet Earth (and to listen to Sigur Ros ).

Hoppipolla ["puddle jumping"] was the tune used as the theme music for Planet Earth. Fits it very well.
