This project is a bit beyond the usual, and I need your input as to wheather or not it's a good idea. I've got just enough silver to build a guitar pick box similar to silver stamp and pill boxes popular long ago. I'm an old silversmith too, so I have the tools and skills required to build it.
The wood form is cut out a bit bigger than the guitar pick. Next I'll wrap the form with two strips of silver, that will be the sliding sides of the box. I can decorate the top of the box with some Turquoise, or a piece of Lapis I have, and stamp the top with indian type decorations. Is this something you'd carry in your pocket to hold guitar picks? How many picks should it hold? Are the indian decorations too much? How would you make it better? Thanks for your input, I don't think there's anything like this out there. Is there a reason? If Santa gave you one, would you like it? |

Here's the finished sterling silver guitar pickbox. It's 1 7/8" long, 1 3/4" wide, 1/4" thick not counting the turquoise stone. Top and bottom are Indian design stamped. Bottom is marked "sterling" with my hallmark and numbered #1. It holds 6 picks easly.
I went with 22 gauge silver, and 3/16" high bezel wire for the sides. Other than vintage silverstamps, tools I used were, MAP gas torch, silver solder flux, pickel, silver solder of 2 different melting temperatures, hammer, leather mallet, files, wet sandpaper, and a polishing wheel. I had the silver and the stone around, so it cost me nothing. I'll have it weighed to find out how much silver's in it. All tools, silver stock, and supplies to build one, except the stamps and, can be found at www.riogrande.com. I like this project, and I just might build some for Christmas gifts, or to go up for sale in the Music Store. Anybody interested in one? |

Thanks again. A design modifacation suggested by the guitar guys at the garage, is to make it clip to a guitar strap.

I had some 26 gauge silver around, so I make a silver pick to go in the pickbox. I designed it with a folded over top, so it would have some thickness in your hand. Next, I added some stamping, soldered the flap down, tempered it, and polished it up. It plays OK, I like a thinner pick, but I wouldn't use a thinner silver, it doesn't take stamping, and I don't think it would be that much better.
The pickbox now has a Makore wood veneer bottom in it to finish it off. |
