I figured i'd start a southern rock thread also ! i think there are a lot of southern rock musicians that are really great musicians also, such as molly hatchet, foghat, allman brothers, doobie brothers, the georgia satelittes, thorogood, .38 special, blackfoot, and of course the kings of southern rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd! so what does everybody think of southern rock??

with me being a southerner, i love this music!! it is what i cut my teeth to!! the songs are fairly simple, but balls out with the guitars! flirtin' with disaster, bad to the bone, la grange, cat scratch fever (even though he wasn't southern), slow ride, gimme three steps, etc. i love southern rock and a lot of bands that i play with love my southern rock influence cause they feel like it makes my playing a little more unique, cause there are a lot of people around here that play the hardcore stuff, so players like me are getting few and far between

what do y'all think of this genre???

Southern rock is the truth. This is probably the most underated genre of all time. Its just rock n roll guitars with basic, country lyrics. Love it, Love it, Love it.

You pretty much named all my fav groups!! But i'll back you up in saying Ted Nugent is really a southern rocker!!! And i'll add Alabama, Marshall Tucker, and The Outlaws. Great bands.

Great Minds think alike!!

I guess i think Alabama falls under southern rock is because song of the south is an anthem of southern rock for me.

Joe Walsh is awesome, love his guitar work. Love Rocky Mountain Way also. Also like his work in the James gang and the song Funk 49.

And guess who we forgot... Charlie Daniels!!!! Best fiddle player of the southern rock era!

I used to really love southern rock, but I"ve sort of drifted away from it. I'm not entirely sure why... I really like that Georgia Satellites song "Keep Your Hands to Yourself", and Foghat, .38 Special, and the Allman Brothers are groups that I still like a lot.

"Southern rock" is just rebadged, powerful blues-rock. That being said, I love it.

Anyways, just to keep things goin', what do you guys think is the best song of the genre......beside freebird and sweet home alabama?

My vote would go to Ramblin' Man, Flirtin' With Disater, and Bad To The Bone.

I think the Allman Brothers - " Whipping Post", and "It Ain't My Cross to Bear" are great southern rock tunes. Also "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" an all instrumental jam.

Flirting with Disaster is definitely up there.

Gimme Back My Bullets has got to be one of the harder rocking ones.

You guys will think I'm crazy, but living in Alabama, I am pretty sick of Freebird. Y'all are teens still, let's see how you feel about it in 20 years. Not even Skynyrd's best song IMO.

I can listen to freebird all day and never get tired of it. I've been listening to it for 14 years, since i was 3, and still love it!! I guess you can say, im a Skynyrd fanatic!!

Gimme back my bullets is definetly up there to.

What is Skynyrd's best song? Other the obvious ones, id say Simple Man, and Four Walls Of Raiford.

i think the best song of southern rock, the one that will incompass a whole genre is slow ride by foghat! i think it has everything that southern rock is about in it!! simple beat, with distorted guitars, but not heavy metal guitars! simple lyrics and a gritty voice! i could be wrong, but that's just my opinion.

and yes we can all get along

Slow Ride is a great song. But its the only foghat song i know. Definetly a southern voice, and a killer beat. The solos aren't that hard either.

I'll add Can't You See- by Marshall Tucker Band.

Can't You See is AWESOME!

Many Tucker songs are great.

You have probably also heard two other Foghat tunes:

"I Just Wanna Make Love To You" an old blues number they rocked out on and kicked ass

"Fool for the City" is the other radio song of theirs

Yeah I am in love with the harmonica solo at the beginning. That's another instrument I would love to play!

I have no earthly idea dude. It came with instructions on how to play it and I tried to play it, but it just didn't cooperate with me.

Unless you specifically look for a different key, most harmonicas are going to be in the key of "C"

Although I believe he was asking what key was the harmonica part in Train Train, which is definitely one of the best Southern Rock classics of all.

I've heard Ramblin' Man... I consider it too soft and poppy, like many other Allman Brothers tracks. Anyway, I don't know much about Southern Rock, but my vote is with La Grange.

Oh, and what is that weird red flag with the blue cross that keeps showing up in your avatars and sigs and such? The flag of Alabama?
