I consider myself as having a rather refined taste in music, and the ability to spot true talent and genius. Just to play devil's advocate here, how do you feel knowing that nearly every song Led Zeppelin ever did was a cover, but Bassnectar actually pioneered a whole new subgenre of music, and that dubstep, though not everyone's cup of tea, is more original than Led Zeppelin, whom was essentially just a pretty talented cover band?

I'm not the stupid one. I know the difference between "you're" and "your", and various other first grade spelling words, unlike you. I also happen to be aware of something that you're not, which is explained in this article.

Now apologize for calling me stupid, and admit that YOU are the stupid one, or I'll show you the door.

who's really to say what's "good" music? Everyone has different taste. I rather think that bands like The Promise Ring, Minus the Bear, and The Smashing Pumpkins (just to name a few) are all very good music, but I'm not going to preach to everyone on my high horse about how good they are because other people probably won't understand. I guess all I'm saying is that nothing is good music. I find Zeppelin to be boring, AC/DC just being a cock rock band of the 80's that revolved its whole existence in music based on very simplistic rock music.

People who just listen to these types of music, the one that they grew up in, doesn't really know how much music has progressed. That good music are rather easy to find nowadays. When you just rely your whole existence of seeing bad music based on what you see or hear on tv and radio and other mainstream public shows, then you are looking for the wrong thing.

Fuck your good music.

OK, I suppose I will be the advocate FOR this thread- although I will agree that what is and what is not good music is all completely subjective.
If you are asking who worships music enough to own MANY cds or albums or a particular artist or band or saw a band several times over - or what band or artist do you continually follow..that is a different story altogether.
In this instance, I would say I have been a KISS fan for probably 35 years.
I got hooked on them when I was just a little kid-put down my Spiderman comic andturned on the TV and saw Kiss and said "superheroes and rock n roll!"- I was hooked. I bought every album- even "The Elder.Had read every magazine article I could as a kid. I have gone to see the guys over all of the years probably around 18 times. Now- you can say whatever you want about th guys- it's true that their music is not always the best or the most complex- sometimes they cannot sing well or play very well.. but they give you your money's worth time-after-time-after-time andi t's one hell of a show- enough to plaster themselves into my very being as an integral part of my growing up and responsible for much of my being a rock musician.

Actually, now that I think about the title for this thread- maybe the title is a bit misleading. One's tastes in music are subjective and really cannot be made to fit neatly into a box of what is "Good" music or not. Really- what you are suggesting in your thread points more to one's level of being a "fan"- ie: having every recording or knowing every song etc. Now, I understand what you are saying because I grew up with the "classic FM radio rock hits" and I was messing around in back seats with Journey on the radio. ..I know what you are most likely trying to get at when you say "Good" music..you mean the good-classics of rock- (in which case I am in the same boat as you,) but the level of one's being a fan does not really have anything to do with the music being good -a look at today's preteen fans and the crap they worship is an excellent example of that.

I'd join in a heart beat. I listen to a bunch of that chugging, screamy "bullshit" that doesn't take any talent to play.

I love good music, but there is not much point in having every song of the band you love. My 2GB memory card won't allow that. I listen to albums, dispose of anything which is not perfect, and then enjoy it in the full knowledge that nothing I do not love will come up.

I just wanna say that sometimes I listen to an FM radio station which plays the top pop songs all day, and I'd say that 95% of it is pure CRAP. But there is some good pop songs out there( EXTREMELY RARE). But what is good music? Pop, rock, metal, jazz, blues, country or just the old songs that today's generation does not listen to?

I also don't listen to the radio.. FM radio only plays commercial music. Which is annoying for me. I have my own taste of music. If you are interested in, you can check my blog sometimes (http://awesomemovees.blogspot.com/)
Sometimes I find really great songs on youtube but other people don't notice them.. :S
Enjoy!

In my own opinion, there is no point in pointing out what is "good" music and "bad" music because it's all subjective, as has been made clear here.

For instance, there is talk about how today's pop music is crap and I'm certainly not a fan of it myself. But I'll go out on a limb and say there were people who thought Led Zeppelin and others were crap at the time because they were popular and on the radio.

Liking something or not is understood, but who of any of us has the right to actually call it good or bad music?

I have no regrets calling uninspired, manufactured by bigwigs, radio-friendly stuff sang by talentless puppets who rely on autotune and production smoke and mirrors to make their music just barely listenable..."bad music". And I think the more we tolerate that shit, the worse it will get. The more media outlets who present the shit in a rose-scented box made of paid hype, the worse it will get.

Well, you certainly have an opinion. I won't argue that point.

I've opened a can of worms that I didn't mean to but I might as well finish the thought. My point is this. I can't stand to turn on most radio stations. I don't like pop music and agree that most of it is unlistenable.....to me.

However, there are masses of people who like it. Maybe they listen to it because it was pushed in their faces but I do believe that many of those people like the music. They have emotional reactions the same way I have an emotional reaction to The Tallest Man On Earth or to John Coltrane.

And I know a lot of the people who listen to Britney Spears would say Coltrane wasn't good music. The point is, it's subjective. There are musicians out there playing on the Ke$ha records who are good musicians and good songwriters writing that music. A lot gets lost in the production or when the labels put in their two cents, but it's still music. So, if people want to listen to it, then so be it. Maybe I'm getting to be a softy as I get older but frankly I'm happy that some music plays a part in people's lives.

I share your sentiments, but I just wish that people wouldn't be so afraid to venture into music that is not created to make you dance and feel good and eat flowers and shit rainbows. People who never get to see the power that SOME music has to lift the veil that is getting thicker every day, I want to show them that there's more to life than surrounding yourself with things that make you comfortable and happy. The sour can be much more nourishing than the sweet, but it's a challenge to digest it. And to quote Walter E. Cole - "We must look for the opportunity in every difficulty instead of being paralyzed at the thought of the difficulty in every opportunity.”

Back when I was in highschool, which was just a few years ago (2005 -2009) I use to listen to all those types of bands (hard rock 70s/80s) all the time, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Stones, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, etc. And that was all I would ever play on guitar but over the past few years I've opened up to whole lot more music now like jazz, new wave, techno, punk, orchestrated like from movie or video game soundtracks Everybody has different tastes plus there are so many different genres, just because something doesn't sound like everybody else doesn't mean it's bad.

If you want to know how different my taste can be check out Oingo Boingo - it only makes me laugh. I'm pretty sure it will be the weirdest, catchiest song you'll hear No wonder Tim Burton loves Danny Elfman so much.

There is no such thing as 'bad' music. Well, there is, to some extent, but everyone likes music for different reasons. One uses music to relax, the other to have fun and dance, yet another listens to music because it inspires them. These are all legit reasons to enjoy music, right? Music made just to dance to and enjoy, isn't going to be as heavy loaded as other music. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with that, and it doesn't make it bad per se. It's simple, doesn't carry a heavy message or the compositions aren't very complicated, but somehow, it works.
There isn't such thing as 'bad music' (Rebecca Black being an exception), to an extent, I understand it when people find generic pop music shallow and empty, but there is good pop music out there, believe me!

Come on. Deadmau5 is good music. And you can find some awesome artists in Rap and Rn'B. You just have to open yourself, and if you really can't stand it, then you can think this is not of your taste, but it's not necessarily "bad music".
