In my opinion the greatest songwriter and composer in heavy-metal genre, Tuomas Holopainen is the keyboard player and mastermind of this Scandinavian band, formed in 1996, with female operatic vocals and heavy use of symphonic orchestrations, they call their music the "movie-soundtrack metal". One of the best performances live, their concerts are definately a must-watch.
Google them up, very interesting band with interesting history and great music.
Nightwish is a great band! But this thread is generally only for Trapaw to post his recommendations. I'd love to see a thread that only contained your recommendations, though. Anybody who likes Nightwish probably has a lot of great recommendations to offer, and that's the sort of thing that deserves its own thread.

It's alright. But you can always start your own thread if you want to give more recommendations. I'm sure we would all love to hear what you listen to.

Band: High On Fire

Style: Metal

Members:
Matt Pike - guitars, vocals
Jeff Matz - bass
Des Kensel - drums

For Fans Of: Slayer, Mastadon, Megadeth

High on Fire is a pretty awesome band. I don't really know much about them since their album, Death Is This Communion, was the product of my most recent random grab and buy at FYE. If you like straight-up metal like Slayer and Mastadon and Megadeth, then check them out. They are really awesome sounding for a three piece.

Band: Psychostick

Style: Metalcore, Humorcore

Members:
Alex "Shmalex" Preiss - drums, vocals
Joshua "Joshy" Key - guitar, vocals
Rob "Rawrb!" Kersey - lead vocals
Jimmy "Jimmychanga" Grant - bass guitar, vocals
Jake "Jakermeister" - guitar

Psychostick is certainly an interesting band. Their generally silly onstage appearance and use of extreme humor in their music makes for an interesting time. So far, they've released two albums: We Couldn't Think Of A Title in 2006, and The Flesh Eating Roller Skate Holiday Joyride in 2007. They frequently use props such as rubber chickens and tennis rackets, and their lyrics are very humorous. In fact, they have been known to stop songs and hold conversation before picking back up.

However, what sets Psychostick apart from other humor-based bands is that they do not disregard the musical aspect at all. They play very seriously and have quite a number of breakdowns and shows of musicianship in their songs. I recommend checking out some of their videos if possible. Songs such as BEER and ABCDeath are great. If you have the chance, get ahold of some of their other songs too!

Psychostick - BEER

Humorcore - that sounds really interesting. I'm going to listen to ABCDeath right now.

...which was too heavy for me. I bet their lives acts are something amazing, though.

Band: Hollywood Undead

Style: Hip Hop, Alternative

Members:
Lyrical Genius - Charlie Scene
Sweet Talker - J-Dog
Loud Mouth - Da Kurlzz
Singer - Deuce
African Baritone - Funny Man
The Server- Johnny 3 Tears

Ok...I just found out about Hollywood Undead from a friend of mine. I generally hate rap, but this is actually interesting. Their lyrics can best be described as a hybrid between Eminem and Linkin Park. It's really catchy stuff. Might not be for everyone, but I found it really entertaining. Check out No. 5 and My Black Dahlia(both have music videos).

Aaaand I'm back with another load of awesome bands to check out. Some you might have heard of before and never bothered to listen to, others that I've pulled off demo discs I've come across that nobody's heard of outside of a 25 mile radius of their hometown.
Here we go!

Strapping Young Lad

Style: Death metal, Extreme Metal

Members:
Devin Townsend- Lead guitar, vocals
Jed Simon- Guitar
Byron Stroud- Bass guitar
Gene Hoglan- Drums

Strapping Young Lad was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada as a one man project by Devin Townsend. This held true on the 1995 debut album Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, in which Devin played most of the instruments. By '97 though, he had put together the basic structure of the most popular SYL line up. After recording four more albums, Devin lad the band to rest in May of 2007.
This is a band that takes metal to a WHOLE different field. Anyone who is familiar with any of Devin Towsend's work(both as a musician and as a producer) knows how stellar his work really is. Along with some of Gene Hoglan's (in my humble opinon) best drum work I've heard yet, Strapping Young Lad is certainly something that doesn't come along everyday.
Strapping was a very candid band, with most of the lyrics being very tongue in cheek or humorous to those in the metal scene.
Definitely not for the average listener, but they aren't so complex that you have to be a hardcore metal lover to understand them. All in all, I'd highly recommend checking them out.

Strapping Young Lad - Love?

In This Moment is fairly decent as far as Metalcore bands go. Though I was disappointed with the new album. Some good bands though I see recommended.

Thanks man. Yeah I haven't heard it yet but that's the general consensus I got. I've been fixated on the new The Faceless album. And Lamb Of God REALLY let me down with their new album.
Do you have a recommendation thread at all?

Got any classic metal recommendations? Something with good, yet simple riffs, not to overused drums and smart lyrics. By the way, it'd be awesome if it had clean vocals as well, I'm getting sick of growls - not that they're necessarily bad, but why the hell is the modern metal scene dominated by growling... it's like the new synonym for heavy metal.

Damn, I wish it were the 80's.
