Has anyone here heard of Tyr? They're this totally awesome folk metal band from the Faroe Islands (I believe). I'm listening to their album Eric the Red right now. I really like the touch added by singing some of their songs in Faroese (I'm assuming. I don't speak any Norse languages.) I first heard their song Regin Smišur at a friend's house and then I was pretty excited when I got one of their cds.

Questions? Comments?

Check them out sometime.

Where are the Faroe Islands? Depending on where it is, it will be good, but only certain parts of the world have good folk music. I'm assuming up north somewhere since they speak Norse?

If I'm not mistaken, they lie somewhere between Iceland and Denmark. The folk influences are similar to many others in the whole Nothern Europe area.

The Faroe Islands lie between Iceland and Norway, a bit above Orkney. The Faroe Islands are in full conscent with the Danish government and the Danish nation. My grandmother has been there on vacation, but I strive to believe that someone there is able to make music. I guess folk metal, must be what's closest.

If rocking out to Regin Smišur is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Oh, not sure if I can understand all of that.

But some of it I think I can manage:

Grani - Some kind of tree.
Hann - He
Sjłrdur - Probably some sea animal.
Orminum- The worm or serpent.

At least to me, as a norwegian that sounds right. But I am not sure.
