Oh don't get us wrong... we understand most emos are under 20... It's a widely accepted fact of life that teenagers make more bad choices when it comes to music. I used to listen to bands like Korn and Limp bizkit... thrashed them silly. It's kinda just hoped you'll grow out of it

Has anyone noticed that emo music (Thursday, Embrace, Rites of Spring) and emo kids are almost completely unrelated? The emo kids mainly listen to My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! which aren't even emo bands. They just get labelled and usually hate it. It's not even a real genre anymore. Come to think of it, it never really was. Tons of music is emotional but wouldn't ever be called 'emo'. Look at How to save a life by The FRay. That's extremely emotional but no one in their right mind would call it emo (probably because it's target audience isn't aged 13). And then most 'emo' music isn't emotional at all - Panic! and FOB don't have any particularly emotional songs that I can think of.

Anyway, what was my point? Probably something like, it's not the music that people object to, just the stupid stereotype (cutting + whining etc) which is rarely true anyway.

Technically most "emo kids" are listening to metal but emo is emotional with alternating singing, whispering, and screaming and consist of bands such as Atreyu and Bullet for my Valentine, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy are somewhat emo but are mostly categorized as punk rock. Bands that are labeled as emo are also usually labeled under another genre also, emo is a different genre but very rarely will you see a group labeled only under emo such as Silverstein or Killswitch Engage.

I suppose it's partly opinion. I've never heard KsE called emo and I class them as metalcore (a genre between metal and hardcore punk). I'd call Atreyu screamo or metalcore and BfmV metal. I categorise bands and genres slightly obsessively in itunes. I hate seeing songs listed without an album or genre. It's the OCD in me. =)

Heck yes! Me too. And I can't handle lables like "rock". That's just too broad. It has to be cery specific, and some labels only have one or two bands.

LOL, I know what you mean

KSE is not that emo anymore but if you listen to their old music then you will see. Atreyu is somewhat metalcore but they are more emo BFMV is not metal but more emo, besides itunes does not have the catagory of emo for genres probably because emo is a more widely accepted genre than it was when it started in the 1980's.

at some point, emo gets a bit tiring to listen to. Its theme, musicality, and lyrics seems to be all the same. I think its better if emo bands try to infuse something different to their craft. But then again, that won't be considered as emo anymore. Its quite a paradox actually.

Yeah, I agree, but I would extend that to all genres. After all, power metal is all basically the same. So is glam rock. Heck, so is classical music.

Note: Music genres (both in name and in style) have been used up so many times, it's hard to accept anything with absolute confidence. Whether it's a fusion or revival, we always end up borrowing and swinging into a change that affects our musical perspectives. Yes, we have bipolar disorder.

Bands like Silverstein Mix emo and a small bit of pop-punk in with there music which sets them apart from most other emo bands.
