not sure what Fleetwood Mac song would be an instrumental..

Hocus Pocus is great!!

Bela Fleck is definitely the best electric banjo player I know of.

Fleetwood Mac had a really great instrumental back in the Peter Green days. It is called "Albatross". It was a number one hit overseas.

Also one titled "Fleetwood Mac" off the 1971 album "The Original Fleetwood Mac", though it was never much of a hit...

Booker T had a few great ones.
The sixties had many cool ones "Grazing in the Grass" (lyrics added later) is the first one to come to mind.

And speaking of drum solos Moby Dick off of Zeppelin II is OUTSTANDING.

Sabbath had a few really nice ones. "Orchid" and "Embryo" both off of "Master of Reality.
Their Snowblind was NOT an instrumental.

I'm actually pretty surprised to see Savatage shwoing up on your list.
"Prelude to madness" is pretty good stuff. I like most of Savatage's works- the stuff after "Hall of The Mountain King" I think is better, but it's a matter of opinion. I just happen to like Zak Stephen's singing better than Jon Oliva- it's smoother. of course, now Zak is in Circle II Circle which is AWESOME- but very tough to find cds around here! Not too many folks listen to Savatage- it's a shame too.. I'll give a big hint to everybody..IF YOU LIKE A SONG OR TWO BY TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA (which is usually played every Christmas on the radio,) then you like Savatage (they were Trans siberian-before trans siberian!)

Did I just shock some folks into silence? I shocked a few folks here at work when I was playing Trans-Siberian orchestra on my cd player and they were all "ooh..cool..love that song!" when I explained to them that they were actually listening to HEAVY METAL- they made a face like I just had them touching pure unfiltered evil.. It's MUSIC folks.. just because it's a little heavy doesn't mean you will sprout horns and start projectile vomiting like the Exorcist...

the song "Christmas Eve Sarajevo" was originally "unleashed" on the Savatage album "Dead Winter Dead" - which the name makes folks think death metal or something really heavy..it's really NOT -it's just Styx or Kansas taken up to the level of heavy (well..maybe up a couple notches..)

For the ones that I could think of from the top of my head would be Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Dick Dale (with or without his Del-tones).

I've tried to listen to other bands play instrumentals, but I always find it odd, mainly because I am used to hearing vocals in said other bands' music.

i saw them a couple weeks ago. the finale they do with the fireworks and the lifting of them and when they run around in the crowd with their guitar and instruments is simply amazing. they gave an audience member a guitar at the end of the show. i would have loved to get one of T.S.O's guitars.

As an avid Bowie-fan, and with Low my favorite Bowie-album, I think I'll pick "A New Career in a New Town" as my favorite instrumental. Upbeat and melancholic in the same time, strangely beautiful.

that sounds awesome! I've seen TSO about 4 times now. Unfortunately I didn't go this year because they moved the show into a large arena that has some pretty nasty acoustics (lots of echo). If they played a place that was smaller (which is the venue I've seen them in all the time) then it would have been worth it. The guys are maniacs-running all through the audience. Fire exploding, lasers..a snow machine that makes a light snow fall out over the audience. It's an awesome show.
I remember the first time they came to town they were playing in the same theater that the symphony plays in. With the word "Orchestra" in their name it was extremely misleading for some folks -as it was in the same venue as the state symphony. So there were 85 year old couples all dressed up in suits and gowns expecting a nice quiet evening of "Christmas with the Orchestra" and then there were several hundred folks in t-shirts, denim and leather (myself being in this crowd) who knew what they were in store for.
The fog machine was cranked up so this place was starting to run out of oxygen..that should have been a good indicator to the stuffy "symphony" crowd that this was not your typical "Orchestra". Of course- the wall of Marshall stacks and drum kit should have given folks an idea.. but as soon as the band took the stage with an earth-shattering power chord blasted through all those amps I saw a lot of those older "symphony" folks make a face of surprise and disgust and run for the door. Shame in a way- but that also allowed the REAL fans (like myself) to move in and take over their higher priced seats!

Ok- I listened to Rush- La Villa Strangiato today and I have to add it to my list of favorite instrumental tunes.

All of my favourite instrumental songs are post-rock ones. If I had to choose one then it'd probably have to be Blaise Bailey Finnegan III by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It has vocal samples in it but it's still an instrumental song if you think about it.
