Depends what it is. I would never buy a guitar or bass guitar on line, just because I like to be able to feel the instrument before I buy it. I bought my amp online, though, and was well satified. I also buy picks online. If I ever bought a keyboard (which I plan to do at some point) I will also consider buying that online, since I don't think keyboards are all that differentiated in terms of size and whatnot like a guitar would be.

I would depending on what it was. If I was gonna blow 500 bucks on a new guitar or bass, not a chance. I really have to feel the instrument for me to spend that much. On the other hand, I bought my mandolin online and it's served me very well. The reason I got it was because it was so ridiculously cheap, so even if it didn't meet my expectations (which it did), it would be a small loss.

My opinions will echo what has already been said for the most part. I have bought picks, electronics (Yamana DD-55 drums), recording equipment (Fostex MR-8), and even a rediculously cheap guitar deal (Epiphone Les Paul) online. But before doing so, I made sure the companies were well known and reputable, and had a very customer-friendly return policy in case things didn't go well. I had good luck with all of these items and never had to return anything, although I was a little disappointed with the Epiphone Les Paul, it's neck kinda felt a little loose. But I tightened it up myself (wouldn't recommend unless you halfway know what you're doing) and it's been a great guitar.
But I don't think I'll ever buy another guitar online, I'll stick to things that are more electronic in nature, or inexpensive accesories and stuff like that. I know that electronic equipment is probably just as fragile and could easily be dropped just like a guitar, but I'm a firm believer in not buying a guitar you haven't actually held in your hands and played first lately. So whatever you decide, weigh the pros and cons, and I hope you have good luck with your purchase. ![]()

I too Have to echo what others have said before me. I have purchased my recording gear (Boss BR1600) and Digitech effects online. Before I made purchases- I have researched everything I could get my hands on online as well as asking other musicians and trying out the same products in stores. I just did the online route because of better prices or deals! Now- as far as my guitars- NO WAY WOULD I GET THEM ONLINE! No- I'm not trying to shoot down the online business, and I agree that many times the prices online are fantastic- but for me I have to actually play the guitar, get a feel of the action- the neck, the sounds-I need to know what I'm getting into 100%. This makes it even tougher for my wife or others to buy a guitar FOR me because now they need to know ME as much as psooible- my style of playig, my tones, my sounds- and then they have to incorporate as much of that knowledge as possible into looking at a guitar and listening to the sales rep speak or play the guitar.. and of course you gotta have a knowledge of good names. If you are going with a reputable name- your odds are better- bUt I still think it's best to get your hands on a guitar to feel if something doesn't play correctly.

I guess I'll repeat what others said: I'd never get a guitar/bass/piano/anything-a-bit-handmade online since I believe each instrument, even on the same brand, is different. On the other hand, I'll have no problem getting synths, effects, software of course, as long as I've been able to test them in a music shop before. There is just one thing I'd buy online without testing, and it's the kind of stuff I know is going to be for training only, or going to sound quite bad anyway, like my future yamaha dd65, or my actual mp-gt1. Being training (and quite cheap) hardware, I don't mind getting it online without previous testing (the mp-gt1, a portable mp3-player-sized multieffect thing, turned out quite nice for what I expected).

Yup. Anything that I already know works. (Stands, sticks, heads etc.) I did get one crappy stand off ebay, but I knew it was off brand and it was cheap. You get what you pay for.
