While doing my usual sleuthing through the forums (yes, sleuthing. ), I noticed the mentioning of a rave. Now, I don't know much about raves, except attending my very first one last year (the question, "are you rolling" has been running through my mind for quite some time).

And now, here's hoping that somebody might shed some light on the subject, has anybody been to a rave before? Or knows somebody who has been to a rave before? And if so, did you (or someone else) go for the music, the dancing, the activities, the shows, or the certain "other" activities?

I've always wanted to attend a rave, mostly for the certain other activities that would (I assume) combine well with the music and the dancing. I don't think they really had raves in my town, though... Alcohol and hip hop were really much more popular.

Never been to one myself, but a lot of my friends in high school went to a lot of them. As for their reasons, probably an even mixture of music, socializing, getting laid, and drugs. Luckily I found other ways to experience all that without having to find some abandoned warehouse downtown. But I always regretted not going with them because I knew someday I'd have some great stories to tell on my music forum.

All of the above... I can't dance for shit so mostly I just hightail it with a skipping step from one side of the floor to the other, but if the DJ is playing the right shit, it really sets you off.

I was rolling every time I went, sometimes I candyflipped, but not very often... don't wanna fry anything.

The right kind of music intensifies whatever you're feeling at the time, so make sure you're in a good mood, drop what you like and feel the euphoria roll off you into everyone else.

Probably some of the best times I've had...

I'm not very good at explaining (mostly complaning) about the rave that we attended. So, with her permission, I got her story of the day she and I went. Naturally, the only thing I can complain about the event was that I was stung by a wasp ten minutes after we got there....

I hate wasps now. Now, here's my friend's account of the rave.

'Are you rolling?' he asked. I replied truthfully that I wasn't, in such a vague, entranced voice that I'm sure he didn't believe me. He then proceeded to knot our glowsticks in the proper way, and use them to give two nearby candy girls a lightshow, which I now know is a common experience at such an event. Rave, festival, party, overpriced druggie carnival, call it what you will, but there were fireworks and snow cones and cheap mechanical rides and slutastic girls and boys as far as the eye could see, and I was happy to be there.

We did buy glowsticks, but we wanted souvenirs that wouldn't flicker out and die cold and lonely in the freezer, so John and I spent our last half hour there walking along the perimeters of the lawn and cheerfully pulling down painted decorations and slipping them into a plastic bag. A security guard asked what we were doing, smiled and told us to continue, but wouldn't help me reach a prize over my head. (We got it in the end, though.)

There was dancing, of course, and sweat and smeared make-up and other more questionable fluids. And performers: stilt-walkers, fire-breathers, belly dancers, aerial artists. Clashing DJs. Smiling faces, a giant slide, girls too young in skirts too short. Kettle corn. A dirty lake. A ferris wheel.

We never did make it to the oxygen bar, though.

Oh, it's four AM. The party's just ending. (Being shifted to a different location.)

Question: do boys who wear heels and corsets and vinyl and glitter and who ARE NOT on drugs/taken/gay/all of the above actually exist? And if so...where are they?

John and I spent a long time trying to describe exactly what is attractive about the opposite sex. This proved impossible to explain with words, so we tested it by trial-and-error, using our fellow festival goers as guinea pigs: How 'bout her? Nah, too pudgy. Maybe her? Her furry boots are stupid - pretty neck, though. Oh but wow, her boyfriend's ass is perfect in that nurse outfit.

I wish I hadn't been sick. (Way-too-much sugar plus flashing lights plus spin-dizzy rides: not a good combination. I only actually rode one ride, but just watching the others was bad enough.) The trying-not-to-vomit thing made writhing against other people on the dance floor just unappealing. (And I usually really love to dance.) Instead we stayed outside near a falafel stand and made ourselves pretty. Came home with phosphoric green body paint coating finger tips and pastel blue claw marks across cheek bones.

Next time more dancing. Next time hopefully we'll have a bigger group, and I'll have learned to really work a glowstick.

But for the present: I really, really want a shower. An amazing night and enthralling atmosphere, but when you sneeze and see the tissue spotted with black, you know you've been around too much smoke. I feel unclean. But regardless of the obscene amount of grime that comes with outdoor Nocturnal Festivals, I strongly recommend the event be experienced at least once in a lifetime. And to all those afraid of the horror stories told by parents, authority figures, and common sense: I am living proof that one can attend a rave and NOT be slipped drugs, raped, and thrown in a ditch. Just stay away from open containers and politely decline 'candy.' Most of the people offering are undercover cops, anyway.

Ragdoll dancing!

There's an emo 'new rave?' I'd hate to see what THOSE are about.

We just went to a regular dance rave...

But seriously, what are 'emo dance raves?'

I'm not too sure, but what we CAN be sure about is that it'll be the rape of another musical genre, a la the "new punk"

It'll do you no good... the dark side is winning.

Why is it that movies are reflections of the nature of reality; ie things happen backwards on the big screen.

Movies - Good guys win, bad guys die. Good music wins out (Bill and Ted) Bad Music (Evil Robot Us's) Lose!

Reality.... Corporations rule the world, gangs have people living in fear and Emo is the biggest music craze atm...

Sometimes I wish I could do something about it, and, at the moment, dream that I CAN do something about it.

I just need to be patient...

...we all do.

"Their" time will come. IT WILL!!!

You should have taken the hint that the wasp gave you and left before you ever got there. Wasp is a very intelligent creature and will only sting to stop you from getting hurt really badly. JMIO!

I should have, huh? But the ticket cost us $40 dollars, and well...

...in the end, everything ended nicely.

1) I've never met, nor hung out with Sum41

2) I've never hung out with Simple Plan. They've hung out with me. And not really recently, unless you count the bald guy stalking us the last time Tara and I went to a show, and growling sleazily at me everytime I ordered a beer...

3) And for the record, recently I spent the weekend hanging out with Aiden and 30 Seconds to Mars. So fuck you

It's not my fault if bands want to hang out with me

No one ever said being a (not so much retired anymore) Groupie was always glamorous.
